MADISON, N.J. – The Manhattanville College men's lacrosse team was back in action on Tuesday night, playing an overtime thriller with Drew University. The Valiants led late, but the Rangers forced overtime with a two goal fourth before netting the winner in overtime to drop Manhattanville to 1-7 on the season.
Jason Frezza (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Portledge) stood on his head in net for the Valiants, recording 21 saves to keep the Rangers' attack at bay. The graduate goalie now has three games this season eclipsing the 20 save mark and has made 122 stops this year.
Frezza was supported by a six point night by
Nick Cornelia (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst). The senior matched his season high from Manhattanville's last game, scoring five times while collecting an assist. Cornelia is now the Valiants' leading scorer on the season with 24 total points, leapfrogging
Sean Larkin (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains) in the leaderboard. Larkin had a three goal night himself, his fourth hat trick of the year. Patrick Maggliochino was also heavily involved in the offense with four assists, a new season high.
Drew staked claim to a 5-1 lead in the second quarter, with Larkin representing Manhattanville's lone tally of the first off Magliocchino's assist. The Valiants came roaring back in the second quarter, scoring five straight goals to take the lead. Larkin and Cornelia each scored twice as part of Manhattanville's run, while
Dillon Sanzari's (Waterbury, Conn./Holy Cross (H.S.)) eighth of the year put Manhattanville ahead for the first time all night. While Drew would even the score before halftime, the offensive surge made it a new game to begin the second half.
The Valiants scored twice to begin the third quarter, as Cornelia began the scoring before
Kevin Rafferty (Yonkers, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) scored his first of the season o put the Valiants up by two. Mike DeMayo scored back-to-back goals for Drew to tie the game back up at 8-8, but Cornelia responded with two of his own, giving the Valiants a two goal advantage with 15 to play.
The Rangers were able to shift into high gear in the final quarter, holding the Valiants scoreless on just four shots while firing 15 shots of their own in the offensive end. Frezza made eight saves, but the Rangers were able to get the two goals they needed from Craig Wilkie to send the game to overtime. With just 26 seconds remaining in the extra period, Brett Spafford snuck a shot past Frezza to win the game for the Rangers.
In addition to his 21 saves, Frezza led the Valiants with five ground balls in the game.
Melchi Agyapong (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Hayes) collected four to go along with a team-leading four caused turnovers.
