Men's Tennis Claims Skyline Regular Season Title With 6-3 Victory Over Yeshiva

MONTCLAIR, N.J. – The Manhattanville College men's tennis team closed out a perfect 7-0 Skyline Conference regular season on Sunday, winning the conference's regular season championship with a 6-3 victory over Yeshiva, handing the Maccabees their first conference loss of the year. The Valiants end the regular season with a 10-5 overall record and receive a first round bye in the upcoming Skyline Conference Championship Tournament as the No. 1 seed.

Three tightly contested doubles contests began the day, with the top two flights both needing a breaker to determine the winner. However, the Valiants were able to claim all three doubles draws to take a 3-0 lead that ultimately led to the match victory. Nick Schlapak (Dover, N.H./Dover) and James Hourihan (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) teamed up for No. 1 Doubles against Tomer Mendler and Eitan Jeselsohn, winning the contest 8-7 following a 9-7 tiebreaker. Over in the No. 2 position, it was Ryan Rosenberg (Frederick, Md./Oakdale) and Luis Gonzalez (Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon) handling a tiebreaker of their own, outlasting Aaron Cohen and Akiva Ackerman for the 8-7 victory with a 7-3 breaker. While the No. 3 flight was able to crown a winner before breaker, Weston Goodwin (Freeport, ME/Freeport High School) and Dylan Crowley (Pelham, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) found themselves in a tight one regardless, defeating Leon Bassan and Jonathan Mayer 8-6 to earn the sweep of doubles play.

The Valiants picked up singles wins in the No. 4, 5, and 6 flights to secure the match victory. Goodwin earned the first victory in the No. 4 position, defeating Jeselsohn 6-0, 6-2. Crowley then finished up his work in No. 6 Singles with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Mayer before Schlapak noted the win in the No. 5 position over Ackerman, 6-2, 6-4.

While Yeshiva was able to earn the points from each of the top three singles flights, the Valiants' doubles victories made it all for naught. Gonzalez was bested by Bassan 6-1, 6-3 in the No. 3 position, while Rosenberg fell to Cohen 6-4, 6-1 in the No. 2 flight. In the matchup that ended up being the last to conclude, Hourihan found himself locked in another close one, ultimately being edged out by Mendler in the top position 6-4, 7-6 (7-4).
