Men's Tennis Season Concludes with Loss to Nichols in NCAA First Round

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – The history-making 2021-22 Manhattanville College men's tennis campaign officially came to a close on Friday afternoon, as the Valiants were defeated by Nichols College in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament by a final score of 5-0. The Skyline Conference champion Valiants, making their first-ever trip to the NCAA Tournament, will conclude the momentous season with an overall record of 13-6.

Manhattanville would drop all three doubles matches to the Bison before the first two singles draws went in favor of Nichols as well, allowing the CCC champions to advance to Saturday's second round and take on Williams College.

The first doubles action to conclude was in the No. 2 position, as Ryan Rosenberg (Frederick, Md./Oakdale) and Luis Gonzalez (Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon) were defeated by Caio Dieckmann and Moritz Kern, 8-2. Weston Goodwin (Freeport, ME/Freeport High School) and Dylan Crowley (Pelham, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) were edged out in the No. 3 flight, 8-4, by the Nichols duo of Jose Siles and Enzo Matos Balleux. With the rest of the action done, both teams gathered on court one to watch the remainder of the No. 1 Doubles matchup of James Hourihan (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) and Nick Schlapak (Dover, N.H./Dover) versus Steven Kuang and Adrian Toderascu. The Valiant tandem trailed seven games to three, but were able to win four straight game points to even the score and send the match to breaker. Despite the tremendous effort to pull the contest back to even, Nichols would take the deciding game point in the flight by a 7-0 score in the breaker to put the Bison up 3-0 as singles action began.

Nichols would claim the decisions on the first two singles contests to earn the necessary five points to secure the match victory. Rosenberg fell to Trevor Schwarzmann 0-6, 1-6 in No. 2 Singles shortly before Schlapak dropped a 1-6, 0-6 decision to Siles in the No. 4 position, earning the win for the Bison. The remaining four singles contests went unfinished with the points being moot. At the time of the conclusion of the No. 4 Singles match, Gonzalez had the closest-going effort for the Valiants, as the 2022 Skyline Conference Tournament Most Outstanding Player was locked in a 6-6 draw in the first set with Toderascu in the first set. Elsewhere, Hourihan trailed Giacomo Ghitti 2-5 in the first set, while Goodwin was behind Kern 1-2 in the second set after dropping the first, 3-6, on court four. Finally in the No. 6 position, Crowley was drown to Santiago Perez 1-2 in set two after Nichols took the first set 6-2.
