FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College baseball team had its season come to an end on Wednesday evening, dropping a 5-3 contest to third-seeded College of Mount Saint Vincent in the opening round of the 2022 Skyline Conference Championship tournament. With the loss, the Valiants conclude the 2022 campaign with an overall record of 19-19.
It was a tightly contested game throughout, but the Dolphins plated three runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a lead over six-seeded Manhattanville that would hold the rest of the way.
Ray White's (Mohegan Lake, N.Y./Lakeland) stellar rookie season came to a close as his seven-game winning streak on the mound was snapped by the Dolphins. The freshman starter tossed five innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on nine hits while striking out one. White ends the year with a 7-2 record and a 3.08 ERA.
After the Dolphins got on the board in the first with an unearned run, the Valiants tied the game in the third.
Tyler Viscusi (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) led off the frame with a single and a steal of second. The senior advanced to third on a
Jake Parisi (Centereach, N.Y./Centereach) groundout before scoring on a ball that
Brian Bornkamp (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) put into play that was misplayed by Mount Saint Vincent's shortstop.
Mount Saint Vincent took the lead once more in the fourth as Dom Porto reached on a bunt that allowed Joey DiNorcia to score. Manhattanville responded in their ensuing turn at bat in the fifth. With runners on first and second, Parisi knocked a double to left to plate Viscusi with the tying run. Bornkamp followed up with a sacrifice fly that allowed
Anthony Pressimone (Bronx, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) to score with the Valiants' first lead of the game, but Parisi was nabbed at third trying to advance to bring an end to the inning with Manhattanville up 3-2.
The Dolphins immediately responded with the biggest inning of the day, plating three runs on four hits in the bottom half to retake the lead. Michael Grisanti drove in Jake Blinstrub with the tying run on a single before DiNorcia delivered the big blow with a two run double that scored Grisanti and Eric Zimmermann. From there, the Dolphins turned the ball over to Sean Kennedy, who allowed just two hits over four shutout innings, striking out four to earn the save and send Mount Saint Vincent to the tournament's final four.
Thomas Iazzetta (Thornwood, N.Y./Westlake) pitched a strong three innings in relief of White, allowing just two hits and no walks while striking out a pair. The junior ends the season as Manhattanville's ERA leader with a mark of 1.27 in 28.1 innings.
Viscusi led the Valiants with two hits in the game and a pair of runs.
Joe McDonald (Coram, N.Y./Longwood) and
Anthony Caputo (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas) also had a hit each to conclude the season.
