Playle's Record-Setting Performance, Field Hockey's 11 Goals Leads to First Win of the Season

ALBANY, N.Y. – Senior Abbey Playle (Reading, England/Leigh High School) set a new program record for points in a single game while the Manhattanville Field Hockey attack erupted for 11 total goals as the Valiants soundly defeated Sage on Wednesday afternoon by a final of 11-1. The victory gets the Valiants into the win column for the first time in 2022, improving their overall record to 1-5 and earning Katie Reynolds her first head coaching victory.

Playle ended the night with a remarkable 15 points, scoring five times while assisting on five other goals. The performance put Playle atop the program's single-game record book for points in a contest, surpassing program great Amanda DeChent's previous record of 12 from 2013. The five goals is the second-highest total scored by a player in a single game in program history, while the five helpers is tied for the most in a single game, a total previously accomplished by DeChent twice during her career.

In all, Playle registered 18 shots, 15 on goal, and one defensive save.

To break down the offensive explosion, the Valiants jumped on top right away and did not look back. Playle tallied the first Manhattanville goal within the first five minutes. A minute later, Ava Panzer (Pawling, N.Y./Pawling) contributed a goal to increase the lead, 2-0. Shauna Lenoue of Sage College netted the team's first and only goal of the night with ten seconds left in the first period, leaving the score 2-1 going into the second.

Manhattanville would go on to add four more goals in the second period. Playle recorded three unassisted goals and Felicity Williams (Glen Falls, N.Y./Glen Falls) followed suit and tallied a goal in the 24th minute. The score at the half would be Manhattanville up 6-1.

To start the second half, a quick response from Makenzie Mueller (Northport, N.Y./Northport Senior) wanting in on the action would contribute a goal to the Valiants' effort. Williams would score again right behind Mueller, both assisted by Playle.

In the fourth, Panzer and Playle made easy work of the Sage College defense and tallied three more goals together. The first of Panzer's being assisted by Playle. Unassisted goals from Playle and Panzer would wind down the clock and bring home Manhattanville's first win of the season.

With plenty of breathing room generated by the offense, the Valiants were able to get all three of their goaltenders to see action in the cage. Florence Harrison (Melbourne, Australia/Balwyn High School) played the entire first half, surrendering the lone goal while making three saves. Cat Morgan (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay Senior) and Lidia Vasquez-Sinisi (Selden, N.Y./Newfield H.S.) each played a quarter in the second, making two saves each. Sage's Anna Church made 21 saves for the Gators.

The Valiants drew 12 penalty corners in the contest compared to seven by Sage.

Up next, the field hockey team will be home for the first time this season on Monday, Sep. 19 at 4 p.m. against St. Joseph's College of Maine.
