Women's Volleyball Blanks Maritime in Skyline Bout

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – A well-rounded team performance on Tuesday night led the Manhattanville College women's volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep of Maritime. The win (25-6, 25-12, 25-15) improves the Valiants' overall record to 9-2 on the year, with all nine wins coming via sweep. Manhattanville also improves to 2-0 in Skyline Conference play.

Meghan Wildes (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) led the team attack effort with seven kills, while Skyline Rookie of the Week Loren Hernandez (Toa Baja, Puerto Rico/American Military Academy) and Zoe Zols (Queens, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) recorded six putaways each. Emily Brown (Kaneohe, Hawaii/Damien Memorial) also added four kills of her own.

Defensively, it was another weekly award winner in Libero of the Week Grace Ballagas (Carolina, Puerto Rico/Robinson School) leading the way with eight digs. Hernandez and Vianca Vital (Carolina, Puerto Rico/Perpetuo Socorro) each had four digs, while Brown and Katelyn Kamei (Honolulu, Hawaii/St. Andrew's Schools - The Priory) dug two balls each. Vital and Caylee Premoli (White Plains, N.Y./School of the Holy Child) combined for 23 of the team's 25 total assists in the match with 12 and 11 sets, respectively.

The Valiants set a new season-high with 18 service aces in the win. Premoli's five aces led the team, while Ballagas and Hernandez had four apiece. In all, six different Valiants had an ace in the contest.

Opening the first set on a 9-1 run, the Valiants built themselves a comfortable lead to immediately set the tone of the night. Manhattanville would score six more unanswered points soon after, jumping out to a 15-2 lead. The Privateers would score just one point total while in control of the serve as the Valiants earned the 25-6 opening set win.

Beginning the second frame in control of the serve, the Valiants built another quick lead with seven straight points. The lead would climb up to 11 with the Valiants holding a 17-6 advantage. Maritime would piece together one of their best runs of the night, responding with six of the next seven points, but a 7-0 Valiant run capped off by a Hernandez ace put Manhattanville up 2-0.

It was more of the same in set three with the Valiants scoring seven of the first eight points. While Manhattanville would build the advantage up to 12-3, the Privateers answered back with a 5-0 run to prevent the Crimson and White from running away. That would be as close as Maritime would make it, however, as the Valiants continued to piece together small runs to seal the deal with the 25-15 third set decision.
