Women's Hockey Falls in Return to Action at Williams

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Making their 2023 on-ice debut, the Manhattanville College women's hockey team was defeated on the road on Monday afternoon, dropping a 5-0 contest at Williams. The non-conference loss drops the Valiants to 7-5-0 as the team begins the second half of the season.

The Ephs outshot the Valiants 48-19, with the shot total for Manhattanville tying for their second-lowest offensive output of the season. With Williams controlling most of the action on Manhattanville's side of the ice, the Ephs were able to control the pace of the game.

The home team scored once in the first before finishing the day with a pair of two goal periods. Franny Gerardi (Yonkers, N.Y./Selects Academy) gave a strong effort in net for Manhattanville despite the onslaught of pucks she faced coming in her direction. The senior goaltender made 43 stops, matching her second-highest save total in a game this year. Gerardi stopped 19 of 20 shots in the first period before making eight saves in the second and 16 in the third.

The Ephs got on the board in the final minute of the first as Leah Rubinshteyn knocked a puck past Girardi with 51 second remaining in the period. Kelly McCarthy and Maddie Tix would light the lamp in the second before Rubinshteyn and Robin Kitazono ended the day with a goal apiece in the third.

Brysha Schmidt (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./The Millbrook School) had the most success in a tough offensive outing for the Valiants with a team-high four shots on goal. Gabrielle Cox (Niverville, NY/Ichabod Crane High School) and Morgan Miller (St. Augustine, Fla./Gilmour Academy) each ended the day with three shots. Grace Genest (Wake Forest, N.C./The Gunnery (Conn.)) blocked a team-leading four shots.

Williams dominated draw control to the tune of a 32-10 advantage on the faceoffs. Miller was the Valiants' leaded with five faceoff wins. Manhattanville finished 0-for-3 on the power play, logging two shots. The Valiant penalty kill unit had a solid showing, successfully holding Williams scoreless on their three power play opportunities.
