PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College women's volleyball team continued its winning ways on Tuesday night as the Valiants bested Yeshiva in three sets. The win (25-1, 25-8, 25-11) brings the Valiants to 17-9 overall, a perfect 10-0 in Skyline Conference action, and 7-1 on their home court in Kennedy Gymnasium.
Samantha Andriola (Garden City South, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) was the Valiants' leading attacker on the night with eight kills in the contest, her second highest total in a match this season.
Emily Brown (Kaneohe, Hawaii/Damien Memorial) added seven putaways, followed closely behind by
Ayla Ruiz' (Honolulu, Hawaii/St. Andrew's Schools) five.
Alana Rivera (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Colegio Marista de Guaynabo) pieced together one of the best performances of her young career, leading the way with a 22 assist, 13 dig, 12 ace triple-double. The 12 aces is tied for the third-most in a single match in program history.
Joining Rivera with strong defensive efforts were
Kayla Jennings (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Lakeland) and
AngelaRosa Garofalo (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac). Jennings, serving as libero on the night, led the team with 16 digs while contributing four assists and an ace. Garofalo, meanwhile, added 13 digs of her own with a kill and an ace.
The Valiants opened the night with 22 straight points, making an immediate statement. A Ruiz kill following Yeshiva's opening serve put Rivera onto the line where she logged seven aces as part of the run. An attack error got the Maccabees on the board, but kills by
Aurea Obradors (Barcelona, Spain/Benjamin Franklin International School) and Andriola sandwiched an attack error to give the Valiants a 25-1 opening set win.
Manhattanville rattled off the first five points to begin set two, building up to a 9-2 lead. While the Valiants were limited from the big explosive run in the second frame, the Maccabees were limited to just eight points in the set, none of which came while the serve was on their side of the court. The Valiants took the set on an 8-2 run, with a Maccabee attack error bringing an end to the set with a 25-8 Manhattanville win.
Another five straight points by the Valiants opened up the third set as Andriola logged three kills and Rivera served another pair of aces. Yeshiva would earn their first consecutive points of the night to end the run, but the Valiants scored the next four. The lead never fell back below six points for the Valiants, with Obradors finishing off the night with her fourth kill of the match to earnt the 25-11 set win.
