Women’s Hockey Falls in Overtime to Chatham, 3-2

RYE, N.Y. – Familiar with overtime games already this season, the Manhattanville College women's hockey team fell in the extra period against Chatham University on Saturday afternoon by a final of 3-2. The Valiants dropped to 2-2-0 on the season, picking up their fifth point of the year in UCHC play.

The Cougars notched the game winner 4:06 into overtime as Chatham used the breakaway opportunity to set up a series of passes that led to Allison Corser-James firing a shot past Franny Gerardi (Yonkers, N.Y./Selects Academy).

The Valiants would get on the board first to start the day with a power play goal from Grace Felicio (Holden, Mass./Wachusett Regional), assisted by Catrina Chinetti (Hyde Park, Mass./Boston Latin Academy) and Charlotte Stanwood (West Vancouver, B.C./Penticton Secondary). With less than a minute left in the period, Chinetti would score a power play goal of her own to go up 2-0 heading into the first intermission. Chatham would be held to only four shots.

The second period would showcase a change in momentum for the Cougars as they outshot the Valiants 16-12.  They would score their own power play goal from Liv McTavish at 14:30 with Corser-James scoring her first goal of the game seven seconds later to tie it up, 2-2.

In the final period of regulation, the Valiants would dominate offensively firing off 10 shots to Chatham's three total but neither team would be able to capitalize and win it outright. That would send it to overtime where the Cougars would hold possession for the majority of the 4:06 played. They would have four shots taken, holding the Valiants without a single shot.

Gerardi took the loss in net for the Valiants with a 24 save effort. The graduate student goaltender would make three saves in the first period, before a dominant 14 save second period, ending the game with three saves in both the third and overtime.

The Valiants had a significant advantage on faceoffs, winning 39 draws to Chatham's 21. Felicio won a team-high 22 faceoffs, while Chinetti added 11. Annie Niedermier (Calgary, Alberta, Canada/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame) would round out the squad with six draws.

Manhattanville went 2-for-8 on their power play chances, firing off 17 shots through 16:32 of offensive advantage. Conversely, the Valiant penalty kill went 3-for-4, holding the Cougars to 13 shots on their power plays.

The Valiants will look to get back in the win column next weekend as they take on Utica University on Friday, Nov. 17 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 18 at 3 p.m. at the Playland Ice Casino.
