READING, Pa. – Wrapping up the weekend series, the Manhattanville College men's hockey team concluded their second sweep of a conference opponent this season after defeating Alvernia University, 4-3 on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Valiants improved to 4-7-0 overall and 4-4-0 in UCHC play.
Manhattanville scored in both the first and third period, while they were able to hold Alvernia without a goal through the first 32:20 of play.
The Valiants would get scoring underway with a pair of goals in the first.
Johno Hoins (Telluride, Colo./The Frederick Gunn School) would light the lamp and begin a phenomenal day for himself on the ice scoring at 1:30 into the period. The goal would be off a dish from
Justin Fernet (Sherbrooke, Quebec/Taft School), who would collect the first point of his collegiate career. Making his return this weekend after an early season injury,
AJ Bella (Norwalk, Conn./Connecticut Roughriders (EHL)) would capitalize on the Valiants' lead and score one of his own to make it 2-0 going into the first intermission. Alvernia outshot Manhattanville 15-11 through the first 20 minutes but
Sebastian Woods (Limehouse, Ontario, Canada/Utica Jr. Comets (NCDC)) played it cool in the crease recording 15 saves.
It would be a dominant offensive showdown through the second period as the Valiants fired off 16 shots to the Golden Wolves' 14. Alvernia's Jackson Fellner would catch everything that came his way which then helped as the Golden Wolves were able to get on the board with a goal from Isaac Chapman at 12:40 to bring the score back to 2-1.
In the final period of regulation, Manhattanville's
Lane Paddison (100 Mile House, Canada/Canmore Eagles (AJHL)) would score a power play goal at 8:35 to put the Valiants back up 3-1 before Alvernia's Matthew Davies would score a power play goal of his own at 12:06. It would be a back-and-forth battle between these two teams through the final 10 minutes of play. Hoins would go on to score his second of the day for a 4-2 lead. The Golden Wolves would find just enough momentum to find the back of the net one more time with another from Chapman at 16:39 but it wouldn't be enough as the Valiants would come out victorious.
The Valiants held an advantage on faceoffs, winning 44 draws to Alvernia's 37. Paddison led the team with a career-high 18 wins, while
Raymond Speerbrecker (Revelstoke, British Columbia, Canada/Revelstoke Grizzlies (KIJHL)) added 13.
Manhattanville would go 1-for-4 on power play opportunities, firing off seven shots total through 5:10 of play. They would go 3-for-4 on the penalty kill, holding Alvernia to an even seven shots as well.
The Valiants take on Connecticut College on Tuesday evening at the Playland Ice Casino to close out the first half of the 2023-24 campaign. Puck drops at 7 p.m.
