GLENSIDE, Pa. – Opening up a three game road-trip to round out 2023, the Manhattanville College women's hockey team defeated Arcadia University on Friday night by a final of 3-2. The Valiants earn their first win since the season-opening weekend against Wilkes back on Nov. 5, putting an end to a six-game winless drought as the team improves to 3-5-1 overall and 3-3-1 in UCHC action.
The Valiants got each of their goals from a different skater in Friday's win. Following a scoreless first period, Manhattanville began the second with a goal from
Gabrielle Cox (Niverville, NY/Ichabod Crane High School) 39 seconds off the initial faceoff. After the Valiants contained the offensive zone to begin the period, a series of quick passes from
Charlotte Stanwood (West Vancouver, B.C./Penticton Secondary) and
Grace Felicio (Holden, Mass./Wachusett Regional) found Cox at the doorstep of the crease, who was able to chip in her ninth goal of the year.
An interference penalty charged to
Ciara Dauer (Winchester, MA/Worcester Academy) put the Knights on the power play midway through the second, with Haylee Kos cashing in from Maeve Hourihan and Leah Hatcher to even up the game at 12:26. The Valiants would respond and retake the lead at 15:12 as Felicio tipped in and redeflected a slapshot from Cox for the senior's third tally of the campaign.
The Valiants carried the 2-1 advantage into the third period where they would net a crucial insurance goal.
Grace Genest (Wake Forest, N.C./The Gunnery (Conn.)) collected a loose puck and connected on a cross ice pass with
Lulu LePage (Swansea, Mass./Elmira College) at their own blue line. From there, the junior defender was off to the races as she made a beeline towards the Knight net where she would score her first Manhattanville goal at 3:08. It would prove to be the game-winner as the Knights got one back at 13:46 from Kianna Saillant. The Valiants would hold Arcadia in check for the remainder of regulation to close out the win, holding the Knights to nine shots on net in the period.
Franny Gerardi (Yonkers, N.Y./Selects Academy) made 37 saves to earn her third victory of the season. The graduate netminder lowers her goals-against average to 2.59 while her save percentage climbs to .922.
The Valiants won 31 of the game's 57 faceoffs with
Annie Niedermier (Calgary, Alberta, Canada/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame) continuing to lead the way on the dot with 13 draw victories.
Despite going 0-for-3 on the power play, Manhattanville had no shortage of opportunities with 11 shots taken with the extra skater. Arcadia finished 1-for-3 on the power play with eight total shots, including the Valiants successfully killing off a five minute major in the third.
