THROGGS NECK, N.Y. - The Manhattanville men's basketball team fell on the road to Maritime, 67-64, snapping their four-game winning streak in their second-straight game down to the last few possessions on Saturday afternoon. The Valiants drop to 6-3 with a 1-1 mark in conference play.
Tommy Lotito (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's) led all Valiant scorers with 20 points on 6-of-19 shooting, grabbing seven rebounds and dishing out seven assists, both of which were a team-high mark. Lotito and Tony Hastings (Clarkstown, N.Y./Clarkstown South) both paced Manhattanville with three steals each, as Hastings slotted in behind in the scoring department with 16, holding a team-high four makes from deep.
Ryan Giordano (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) controlled the paint for a game-high three blocks, rounding out the Valiant scorers with 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting, with almost a perfect 5-of-6 mark from the charity stripe.
Manhattanville would use the opening twelve minutes to build a 14-9 lead over the Privateers, as Lotito and Giordano combined for ten of the aforementioned fourteen. The Valiant defense clamped down to open the contest, forcing Maritime into five turnovers, and just a mark of 3-of-10 shooting during the run. The two squads would trade baskets for a back-and-forth rest seven minutes, showing the Valiants hold a 25-24 lead following an Amadou Kouyate layup, for what would be the last Manhattanville lead of the contest. The Privateers used a three-point swing from a foul on an attempt from deep to put the score at 27-25 going into the half-time break.
Maritime would mount a 21-12 lead over the opening eight-and-a-half minutes, as the Privateers found their shooting stroke, connecting on 8-of-12 attempts from the field and 5-of-7 from deep. Theo Noble led the charge, finishing the contest with a game-high 25 points with a stellar 8-of-14 efficiency, adding on eight rebounds. The Valiants would then claw back down the stretch, sparking a run of their own, spearheaded by Giordano. The 26-18 run included a perfect 10-of-10 from the line and forced six Privateer turnovers, to pin the score at 64-63 with only eight seconds left to play. Maritime would hit the ensuing two free throws to put the lead back to three, as the Valiants ran out of time, seeing the Privateers with the 67-64 lead as the final buzzer sounded.
