RYE, N.Y. – A four-goal second period by the Chatham Cougars was enough to upend the Manhattanville College men's hockey team on Saturday afternoon, 6-1. The first period would look much like yesterday's start with no points on the board through the first 20 minutes. Manhattanville would get off 15 shots while Chatham would fire 14 total.
Action would start 5:16 into the second period as power plays were aplenty for the Cougars. Chris Dusek would light the lamp off a dish from Andrew Warhoftig for Chatham's first goal of the game. Brendan Pomerantz would extend the lead, 2-0, in the 12
th minute in another man advantage with assists awarded to Bekk McClaine and Michael Hurst. With only a minute left in the period, Warhoftig would add to his stat line and get a goal for himself in yet another power play opportunity for the Cougars to go up, 3-0. 20 seconds later, Dusek would fire one home and score his second of the day from Ben Lamm and Warhoftig to send Manhattanville into the locker room down 4-0 heading into the final period of regulation.
The Cougars would gain momentum as Tristan Hillebert would score in the second minute of the third period for a 5-0 lead off of a dish from Lucas Rothe. A minute later, McClaine would fire one in the net for the sixth and final goal of the day for Chatham, but enough insurance to make it through the last 16 minutes. During the sixth minute, Manhattanville would find their golden opportunity to finally get on the board. On a power play, Emoff and
AJ Bella (Norwalk, Conn./Connecticut Roughriders (EHL)) would work the ice and find an open
Dan Barry (St. Louis, Missouri/Vermont Lumberjacks (EHL)) to fire it off and score the lone Valiant goal. The weekend would end in a split series, with a final score of 6-1 for Saturday's matinee.
Roy was charged with the loss in net for the Valiants, making 26 saves and allowing four goals across 40 minutes of play.
Sebastian Woods (Limehouse, Ontario, Canada/Utica Jr. Comets (NCDC)) would come in for the final period, saving 14 shots fired his way and allowing two goals.
Faceoffs were 32-29 in Chatham's favor on the afternoon, with Fletcher winning a team-high nine draws for Manhattanville while
Lane Paddison (100 Mile House, Canada/Canmore Eagles (AJHL)) and
Elijah Devereaux (Webster, N.Y./Danbury Jr. Hatricks (NA3HL)) added six and five draws, respectively.
The Valiants successfully killed off two-of-six Cougar man advantages with 16 shot attempts and went 1-for-5 with nine shots on the offensive ice during their power play chances.
The Valiants will hit the road and head to King's College for their final series of the regular season before playoff action. Puck drops at 7 p.m. on Friday Feb. 17 at the Revolution Ice Centre.
