NEW YORK, N.Y. – Four shooters reached double figures as the Manhattanville College women's basketball team put up their second-highest point total of the season as the Valiants defeated Yeshiva on Sunday evening, 77-64. The Valiants remain in sole possession of the No. 2 seed in the Skyline Conference standings with the win, improving to 14-2 in conference play and 18-3 overall.
Jamison Agostino (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) bounced back from her one field goal performance earlier in the week with a .500 shooting night against the Maccabees, scoring a team-high 17. The junior hit five three pointers as part of her six field goals, her seventh time this season that she has hit five deep balls. In addition to being her 15
th game of the season in which she reached double-figures, Agostino has now hit 66 three pointers on the year to tie the single-season program record. Agostino matches the mark set by current assistant coach
Spencer Shore last season and will have two more chances in the regular season next week to become the new Valiants' single-season three-point leader.
Julianna Kascic (North Bergen, N.J./Paramus Catholic) earned her 11
th double-double of the season as she finished with 13 points and a team-high 12 rebounds. Kascic also shot .500 from the field while also earning six assists with some clutch passing.
Livi Correia (North Attleboro, Mass./Worcester Academy) added 12 on a very efficient 4-for-5 shooting night to set a new career-high, while
Niyona Smith (Baltimore, MD/Concordia Prep) scored 10 for her fourth double-digit game in her last five outings. The duo of Correia and Smith combined for 13 steals, with Smith leading the charge with eight of the takeaways.
It was a 6-0 run for the Valiants to open up the night as Smith hit back-to-back layups before
Amanda Orlando (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) added a basket of her own. While the Maccabees responded with two quick baskets of their own, Agostino hit her first deep ball of the night to begin a 7-0 run. Daniella Bessler would get Yeshiva back on the board with a three pointer of her own to cap off the quarter with the Valiants up 13-7.
Manhattanville shot a lights-out 67 percent in the second quarter as they extended their lead. It was another 6-0 to begin the quarter to go up 19-7 with 6:22 left in the half. After facing their largest deficit of the half, the Maccabees narrowed the gap down to five with 4:15 left to play. Yeshiva was able to keep the game within striking distance over the following three minutes, but the Valiants closed out the half hot, scoring eight unanswered points in the final minute as
Kristen Scrobola (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas High School) beat the buzzer with a layup to send the teams to the locker room with the Valiants up 34-21.
Yeshiva came out to begin the second half with their best shooting quarter of the night, going 11-for-16 from the field. However, the Valiants continued their strong offensive production as the Maccabees would only outscore Manhattanville by three over the frame. The Vals would extend their lead up to a peak of 15 during the quarter before Yeshiva's Abigail Koenig connected on a pair of shots to cut into the visitor's lead, 56-46.
The Maccabees continued to shoot well to close out the game with a .546 percentage in the fourth, but the Valiants go the job done at the line to put the contest away. Manhattanville shot 9-of-12 at the charity stripe as Yeshiva got into foul trouble with time working against them. Agostino hit a shot from deep to begin the final quarter's scoring before Orlando and Kascic began the free throw effort with a perfect 4-fof-4 start to put the Valiants ahead by 16, 63-47. The lead would not fall back below 13 the rest of the way, as Agostino hit her record-tying three with 6:08 to play that put the Valiants up by 19. The Maccabees outscored the Valiants 14-8 over the final six minutes but ultimately fell short, 77-64.
