Women's Hockey Closes Out Regular Season With 11-0 Win on Senior Day

RYE, N.Y. – It was a Senior Day to remember for the Manhattanville College women's hockey team on Saturday as the Valiants scored 11 goals in a shutout victory over Neumann. Manhattanville will officially end the regular season with a record of 14-10-1 and a conference mark of 14-5-1, having clinched the No. 3 seed following yesterday's victory.

The 11 goals are the most the Valiants have scored in five years since hanging 12 on King's in January 2018. Appropriately enough for Senior Day, seven of the tallies and 15 total points would come courtesy of the Class of 2023, who were honored with a pregame ceremony. The seven graduating Valiants—Fjolla Berisha (Mahopac, N.Y./Brewster Lady Bulldogs (NEGHL)), Kerry Carr (New Hartford, N.Y./Millbrook School), Gabrielle Cox (Niverville, NY/Ichabod Crane High School), Morgan Miller (St. Augustine, Fla./Gilmour Academy), Laney Nash (Edmonds, Wash./Edmonds-Woodway), Ava Panzer (Pawling, N.Y./Pawling) and Erica Sandilands (Winnipeg, Man./Balmoral Hall Blaze (JWHL))—were joined on ice by family and friends as their accomplishments of their collegiate careers both on and off the ice were celebrated prior to game time.

The festivities were far from over following the final group photo as the Valiants began the day with a four-goal first period. Miller got the party going 5:06 into the game with her 10th goal of the season set up by her classmates Berisha and Panzer. The 1-0 lead would hold until the Knights found themselves in penalty trouble. Neumann would survive the first onslaught from the Valiant power play while allowing six shots, but Manhattanville would score on both of their following power play chances on their first shots with the extra skater. It was Cox netting the first at 14:58 from Holly Meredith (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Vermont Academy) and Annie Niedermier (Calgary, Alberta, Canada/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame).

With the power play goal, Cox ties the program record for the most in a single-season with 11 and will finish the regular season second in the entire nation in the category.

Not to be left out of the fun, Carr notched her own power play tally with 1:22 remaining in the period with assists by Virginia Birnie (Ontario, Canada/Rosethay Netherwood School) and Grace Genest (Wake Forest, N.C./The Gunnery (Conn.)). Brysha Schmidt (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./The Millbrook School) closed out the period with her sixth goal of her rookie season with 47.3 seconds left before intermission, netting an even strength tally from Miller and Catrina Chinetti (Hyde Park, Mass./Boston Latin Academy) to take a 4-0 advantage.

The Valiants replicated their offensive success in the second with another four goals. After assisting on the first period finale, Chinetti recorded the team's third power play goal of the affair from Genest 4:43 into the period, the rookie's sixth overall and her first collegiate power play tally. Niedermier then worked her way into the goal column at 11:14 from Berisha with her sixth of the season. The senior duo of Miller and Carr closed out the period with each of their second goals of the evening. Miller kicked the PAT to make it a 7-0 game with six minutes to go in the period from Schmidt and Berisha. With less than six seconds remaining before the second period intermission, Carr struck again for her fifth of the year from Grace Felicio (Holden, Mass./Wachusett Regional) to put the Valiants up 8-0 entering the final 20 minutes.

Felicio opened up the scoring in the third as she buried a feed from Cox to score her fifth of the season 2:07 into the period. Cox then put the finishing touches on both Senior Day and the regular season as she notched her third hat trick of the year with a pair of goals in a 20 second span. The senior first scored unassisted 7:32 into the period before striking again from Miller and Berisha at the 7:52 mark.

It was an appropriate close to the regular season for Cox, who continues her climb up the program record books with her stellar campaign. The three goals on Saturday brings her season total to an even 30, becoming just the fourth player ever in Valiant history to reach that plateau. Cox has now scored the most goals by a Valiant since 2001-02, and is tied for the second-most goals in all of NCAA DIII.

As the offense fired on all cylinders, Franny Gerardi (Yonkers, N.Y./Selects Academy) handled business on the defensive end. The goaltender logged her second-consecutive shutout as she was only faced with 10 shots on net. Gerardi will carry a 1.69 goals-against average and a .942 save percentage into the postseason.

Manhattanville won 34 of the game's 58 faceoffs, with Miller winning 11 draws for the Valiants.

The Valiant power play finished 3-for-5 on the night with 16 total shots. The penalty kill was equally as dominant, holding Neumman to just two shots on six extra skater opportunities.
