THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – In a matchup of a pair of Skyline Conference North Division foes, the Manhattanville College men's basketball team was defeated by SUNY Maritime on Saturday afternoon, 66-50. With the loss, the Valiants move to 15-6 overall and 8-4 in Skyline play, now tied with Maritime for second in the division.
It was a rough go of things offensively for the Valiants as the team would be held to their second-lowest point total of the season. The team's .364 shooting percentage from the floor was their fourth worst of the season as the Valiants hit just 19 field goals over the duration of the contest.
Despite the cold shooting performance by the team,
Tommy Lotito (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's) continued his stellar senior campaign with his 15
th consecutive game in double figures. Lotito put up 16 on a 7-for-16 shooting effort while also leading the team's effort in rebounds with seven.
Matt Bielenda (Wethersfield, Conn./Xavier) and
Ryan Giordano (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) were also involved in the battle of the boards, collecting six caroms apiece. The Valiants would be outrebounded by just one board, 34-33, but were held to just three second chance points on the day.
Lotito would also finish with a team-leading three steals in the loss, while
Jackson Leech (Chicago, Ill./Von Steuben) was credited with three assists in the affair.
After trading baskets across the opening three minutes, Maritime would go on a 15-0 run, led by three shots drained from beyond the arc. The offensive outburst moved the score to 20-5 in favor of the Privateers, a lead that the Valiants would unsuccessfully try to claw back from for the remainder of the day.
The Valiants would trim the deficit down to eight with 7:35 left in the half, trailing 22-14. Maritime would respond by rebuilding their advantage with a 9-0 run that put the home team back ahead by 17. The Valiants would attempt to narrow the gap once again in the closing minutes as they brought the score to 31-22, but the Privateers would score the final seven points of the half to take a 38-22 advantage at the break.
Manhattanville would open the second half on a 12-3 run, pulling back within eight with 15:28 to play in regulation. That would be as close as Manhattanville would ultimately get, as Maritime responded with an 8-0 run that reestablished a 16 point advantage with 11:13 remaining. The Privateer advantage never fell back below ten as the Valiants would be unable to ultimately overcome that explosive Maritime start to the contest. The Prvateers would lead by as many as 19 en route to the 66-50 win.
