PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College women's lacrosse team kept on rolling on Wednesday evening as the Valiants picked up their third-straight win to open up the season. The Vals made their home debut in the contest, entertaining the Manhattanville faithful to an 18-8 victory over Ramapo. Manhattanville is 3-0 to begin the season for the first time since 2019.
The leading duo of
Marisa D'Angelo (Wantagh, N.Y./MacArthur) and
Kerry Carr (New Hartford, N.Y./Millbrook School) accounted for 14 points on the day, scoring 11 goals and earning three assists. D'Angelo found the back of the net six times, setting a new personal benchmark for goals in a game. Carr, meanwhile, scored five goals and handed out a pair of assists to remain the team's leading scorer on the young season with 16 total points.
Fresh off her Skyline Rookie of the Week win,
Kaci Pierce (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) picked up right where she left off on Saturday with her second-straight four goal game. The rookie attacker has scored 10 times across the first three games of her career.
D'Angelo would get her strong night started as the first scorer of the contest, putting the Valiants up 1-0 two and a half minutes into the game. The Roadrunners responded with goals from Kelly Griffin and Colleen Mason to take a lead with 8:51 left in the first. Manhattanville pulled back even on D'Angelo's second of the game a minute later, assisted by Carr, it what would be the start of a 4-0 run for the Valiants. D'Angelo and Carr would alternate scoring over the duration of the run, with D'Angelo notching a hat trick 10:47 into the game. The Valiants led 5-2, but Ramapo got one back in the closing seconds of the quarter on Mason's second of the game.
Mason would pull the Roadrunners back within one 11 seconds into the second with her third of the game. With Ramapo threatening, the Valiants would piece together a string of nine consecutive goals that would span across the two halves to firmly take control of the game. Manhattanville netted five tallies in the second quarter, getting a pair of scores from Carr as well as goals from D'Angelo,
Pietra Cabral (Mineola, N.Y./Mineola), and Pierce to jump ahead 10-4 at half's end. D'Angelo's tally came shorthanded to kickstart the run. She would also notch an assist on one of Carr's tallies, joining
Brysha Schmidt (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./The Millbrook School) and
Maura Kelly (Stratford, Conn./Bunnell) with second quarter helpers.
Halftime did little to cool off the Valiant attack as Manhattanville scored four straight to begin the third quarter. It would be D'Angelo striking again with another two goals, joined by Carr and
Ally Petricca (New Hyde Park, N.Y./New Hyde Park Memorial) on the frenzy. The 14-4 lead enacted the running clock with 3:54 remaining in the third quarter. Not ready to go off quietly into the night, the Roadrunners scored three times over the final three minutes of the quarter, getting tallies from Mason, Erin Smeilus and Ella Shade to move the score to 14-8 in favor of the Vals with 15 minutes to play.
Griffin made it four straight goals by the visitors to begin the fourth quarter scoring, pulling Ramapo within six with 13:10 left to go. The would be as close as the Roadrunners would get, as Manhattanville scored the final four goals of the game to go back up by ten. Pierce would score her second of the game with 12:47 left in regulation before Cabral notched her second tally with 7:57 remaining. Pierce would score twice more to put the Valiants up 18-8 with four minutes to play, once again enacting the running clock before closing out the contest.
Britney Sirota (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) made 11 saves in the win for Manhattanville. It was the senior netminder's first double-digit save effort of the season, brining her total on the year to 27 as she sports a 7.00 goals-against average with her 3-0 record.
Abbey Playle (Reading, England/Leigh High School) earned a team-high eight draw controls in the win. She would also collect two ground balls and cause a turnover. The ground ball effort was led by Petricca and Schmidt with four apiece for the Valiants, while Schmidt and Carr both caused a pair of turnovers.
