PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College softball team made both their home and conference debut on Sunday, sweeping a doubleheader against Yeshiva. The pair of wins improves the Valiants' record to 6-4 overall and 2-0 to begin play in the Skyline Conference.
The Valiants outscored Yeshiva 24-0 in the pair of run-rule victories, surrendering just one base hit across the two games. In the opener,
Charli Shinstine (Encinitas, Calif./San Dieguito Academy) and
Samantha Walsh (Spring City, Pa./Owen J Roberts) combined for the 23
rd recorded no-hitter in program history. It was Shinstine's fifth time involved in a no-no while at Manhattanville, while it was Walsh's first involvement with a no-hitter in her career.
Game One Recap: Manhattanville 14, Yeshiva 0 (Five Innings)
The Valiants plated 10 runs in the first inning to get off to a quick start on the day's action. In total, Manhattanville plated 14 runs on 15 hits to secure the win.
Sarah Harker (Irvine, Calif./Irvine) opened up the day's scoring with an RBI single to plate
Jayleen Torres (Bellflower, Calif./Downey).
Juliana Parkes (Victoria, British Columbia, Canada/Belmont Secondary) and
Sydni Brooks (Anaheim, Calif./Cypress) would each notch a two-run double to put the Valiants up 5-0. Back-to-back RBI singles off the bats of
Melissa Lopez (Whittier, Calif./California) and Shinstine further the lead up to 7-0. A Maccabee error resulted in the eighth run of the inning before an
Amaya Esparza (Descanso, Calif./Granite Hills) sac fly and Parkes' third RBI of the frame made it a 10-0 lead for the Valiants.
Manhattanville plated four more in the bottom half of the second. Shinstine continued to help her own cause with a two run double before Melissa Gonzalez drove home Lopez. Another Yeshiva error would result in the Valiants' 14
th and final run of the game.
With plenty of run support, the tandem of Shinstine and Walsh were able to combine for the no-hitter. Shinstine got the start, throwing three innings and recording all nine of her outs via strikeout. Only one batter would reach base against the Manhattanville starter as a result of catcher's interference. Walsh would make her way into the circle from shortstop for the final two innings as the sophomore struck out four in her third pitching appearance of the season. Walsh struck out the side in the fifth as the game came to a close via run rule and the Valiants completed the combined no-hit effort.
Game Two Recap: Manhattanville 10, Yeshiva 0 (Five Innings)
The Valiants completed the sweep with 10 runs on 10 hits in the finale of the doubleheader.
It was another quick start for Manhattanville as the team plated seven in the first inning. Parkes, Brookes and
Samantha Reyer (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) each collected an RBI to kickoff the scoring.
Olivia Fasce (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) then stepped in with the bases loaded, dropping in a single to center to score two more.
Emily Mottoshiski (Craryville, N.Y./Taconic Hills) doubled in a run before a Yeshiva error allowed the seventh run of the inning to score.
With Mottoshiski providing herself some additional run support, the sophomore was able to secure her first win of the season. Mottoshiski threw four innings, allowing just one hit while striking out a season-high seven.
In the second, the Valiants plated three more runs on four hits. Brooks scored
Isabella Tansey (San Diego, Calif./University City) with a double while Fasce cashed in again with the bases loaded with a two-run single to move the score to 10-0.
Harker relieved Mottoshiski for what would be the final inning, retiring the side in order to enact the run rule and complete the sweep.
