PURCHASE, N.Y. – A rough first inning doomed the Manhattanville College baseball team on Wednesday afternoon as the Valiants fell to Skidmore by a final of 17-7. The loss is the team's fourth-straight as the Valiants drop to 5-8 on the season.
The Thoroughbreds plated nine runs in their first turns at-bat, using eight hits and four walks to fuel the offensive eruption. The hot bats spelled an early end to the day for
Joseph Lacoparra (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac), who lasted 0.2 innings and being charged with all nine runs after allowing eight hits in the loss.
Skidmore plated two more in the top of the third before the Valiants got on the board in the bottom half. With the first two men reaching base to open up the inning,
Tyler Mandel (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale) brought
Brian Bornkamp (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) home with a single to account for Manhattanville's first run. After a pair of Skidmore errors,
Michael Musantry (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) hit a sacrifice fly to plate Mandel.
The Thoroughbreds scored five more runs on three hits in the sixth to roll to a 16-2 lead. Manhattanville would have their best licks at bat in the bottom of the seventh with a five run inning of their own. A pair of walks and a hit by pitch loaded the bases for
Jake Parisi (Centereach, N.Y./Centereach). The senior picked up his eighth and ninth RBIs of the season with a double before
Gregory Tashik (Midland Park, N.J./Midland Park Jr./Sr.) followed in suit with a two-run double of hits own a batter later.
Frank Delgado (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) brought home the fifth run with a single to left, scoring Tashik to move the score to 16-7.
Skidmore added one last run in the eighth as the Valiant bats were unable to replicate their seventh inning success to fall by the 17-7 final.
TJ Fuerst (Purchase, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac),
Jay Lockwood (Stamford, Conn./Stamford) and
Ian Murray (Commack, N.Y./Commack) would all see work out of the pen, all pitching 2.1 or more innings. Murray was the long man, tossing the final 3.2 innings as he allowed a pair of runs on three hits while striking out one. Fuerst and Lockwood both recorded three punchouts.
