ARLINGTON, Va. – A pair of four-goal performances by Marymount's Chris Bochilo and Ciaran Connolly were too much for the Manhattanville College men's lacrosse team to overcome on Saturday afternoon as the Valiants suffered their first loss of the season, 13-7, to the Saints. Manhattanville drops to 2-1 on the year with the loss.
While
Sean Larkin (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains) would put the Valiants on the board 56 seconds into the contest, the Saints would rattle off five goals in the quarter to take a lead through the opening 15 minutes. Paul Vey and Bochilo netted back-to-back unassisted tallies to give Marymount a 2-1 lead four minutes into the game. Larkin would strike again with 6:37 left in the quarter to tie the game back up before Gavin Taylorson, Connolly and Jack Williams each scored over the final 6:09 of the quarter to put the Saints back in front. Marymount would go on to protect the lead for the duration of the contest.
After Bochilo opened up the second quarter scoring 1:30 into the period,
Jesse McGrath (Walden, N.Y./Valley Central) put the Valiants back in the goal column with a man-up tally from
Nick Cornelia (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) with 12:57 left in the half. It took just seven seconds later for
Nick Padovani (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) to notch his first collegiate goal, winning the faceoff, collecting the ground ball and firing a shot past Matthew Davis. With the Valiants trailing by just two goals with 12:50 left in the half, the Saints went on a 3-1 run to close out the quarter with a 9-5 lead. Bochilo added his third and fourth goals of the game to put Marymount up 8-4 with 4:22 left in the half.
Nick Cornelia (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) netted the Valiants' second man-up goal of the affair with 1:58 to play from
Drew Palladino (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh), and while it seemed Manhattanville would head into the half down by three, Connolly struck again for the Saints with four seconds remaining to give the home team the four goal advantage through 30 minutes of play.
After 14 combined goals in the first half, the Valiants and Saints combined for just six goals over the remainder of the game. Marymount would outscore Manhattanville 2-1 in both the third and fourth quarters. Connolly put the finishing touches on his four goal performance with both of the Saints' tallies in the third before Cornelia netted his second of the game from Larkin with 2:17 left in the quarter to close out the scoring in the third. Larkin earned a hat trick with his third goal of the game from
Niko Klopp (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara) 1:21 into the fourth, but a man-up goal from Vey and an even strength tally by Will Strausbaugh gave the Saints their 13-7 advantage they protected for the remainder of play.
Cody Johnston (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) made a career-high 20 saves in the loss for the Valiants. The graduate student has played every minute in goal for the Valiants thus far in the young season with 49 saves on the year. He would also scoop up a team-high nine ground balls.
Padovani had a strong effort on the faceoffs, winning 14 of the 22 draws he took while collecting four ground balls.
Jarod Wilmoth (Harlem, N.Y./Cardinal Hayes) added three ground balls while causing a team-high three turnovers.
