Baseball Scores 28 In Doubleheader Sweep of Penn State Berks

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Bouncing back from yesterday's season-opening loss with thunder, the Manhattanville College baseball team scored 28 runs in a doubleheader sweep of Penn State Berks on Sunday. The Valiants improve to 2-1 on the young season with the pair of wins.

Game One Recap: Manhattanville 20, Penn State Berks 4 (Seven Innings)
The Valiants got off to a hot start in Sunday's action at Myrtle Beach, plating 20 runs across the first five innings to cruise to a 20-4 win.

Ray White (Mohegan Lake, N.Y./Lakeland) was the beneficiary of the massive run support as the sophomore hurler made his debut for the season. White went five innings, allowing three runs on five hits and a pair of walks while striking out three. Sean Demo (Cape May, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) and Jack Taggart (Levittown, N.Y./Division Avenue) closed out the game with an inning of work each, with both relivers striking out a pair.

A Tyler Mandel (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale) RBI single to score Joseph McDonald (Coram, N.Y./Longwood) in the first inning put the Valiants ahead early, but the Nittany Lions got the run back in the bottom half on a sac fly. It would be in the second where the Valiants hung their first crooked number of the day on the scoreboard, putting up five runs on three hits and a pair of Berks errors. McDonald came up to the dish with the bases loaded and one away, driving Michael Matica (Pleasantville, N.Y./Pleasantville) home with a single. Jake Parisi (Centereach, N.Y./Centereach) scored in the following at-bat on a Brian Bornkamp (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) groundout before back-to-back errors allowed two more runs to score. Michael Musantry (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) delivered the final blow of the inning, an RBI double that brought Chris Goohs (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown H.S. East) home to give Manhattanville a 6-1 lead.

Not quite content with the previous inning's work, Manhattanville scored eight runs in the third on nine hits. McDonald, Bornkamp and Goohs hit three straight RBI singles before a double steal allowed Bornkamp to nab home with the fourth run of the inning. Berks turned a double play to almost get out of the inning, but the Valiants delivered four two-out hits to plate four more runs before the frame could come to a close. Joshua Gillison (Buchanan, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson), Parisi, Matica and McDonald drove in the final four runs of the inning as the Valiants went up 14-1.

Berks scored twice in the bottom of the third, but Manhattanville plated three more runs in each of the next two innings to put any comeback thoughts to rest. A Gillison RBI single prefaced a Braden Kunda (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester) double that plated two more in the fourth. In the fifth, Justin Encarnacion (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Hayes) and Gillison drew bases loaded walks while Nick Siano (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) drove home a run with a single.

The Nittany Lions would score their final run in the bottom of the seventh to plate an unearned run against Taggart to close out the opener.

Game Two Recap: Manhattanville 8, Penn State Berks 3 (Seven Innings)
While the offensive display was not quite on par with the opener, the Valiants continued to do work at the plate as Manhattanville erased a 3-0 first inning deficit to complete the sweep.

Chris Antonelli (Yonkers, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) had some trouble with his command in the first inning on the mound, as Berks loaded the bases on three straight singles. The junior pitcher issued a pair of bases loaded walks to give the Nittany Lions their first two runs of the game before a sac fly brought home the third. A pair of strikeouts got Antonelli out of the inning without further damage.

The Valiants immediately went to work in support of their starter, with Musantry driving home McDonald with a two-out single. Manhattanville tied the game up in the third on a Frank Delgado (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) RBI double and a Mandel RBI single before McDonald drove home Parisi on a ground out an inning later to take the lead.

Meanwhile, Antonelli settled in, allowing just one hit between the second and fifth innings as the Valiants hit their way back in front. The junior would earn the win in his first start with the Valiants, going six innings while allowing the three first inning runs with five hits and three walks while striking out nine.

The Valiants plated four insurance runs in the fifth. Mandel drove in his second of the contest in the second at-bat of the inning before the Valiants earned their next run with some trickery on the basepaths. Musantry reached on a single before stealing second before Siano came on as a pinch runner for Gillsion after he drew a walk. The Musantry and Siano duo successfully pulled off a pair of double steals, allowing Musantry to steal home with the Valiants' sixth run. Three batters later, Matica put a capper on the day's slugging with a two-run single to plate Siano and Parisi for an 8-3 lead.

Travis Brescia (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) closed out the game with a scoreless seventh, working around a pair of walks with two strikeouts as the Valiants completed the sweep.
