Baseball Falls to Bridgewater State in Myrtle Beach Finale

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Manhattanville College baseball team concluded their Spring Break trip on Tuesday morning as the Valiants fell to Bridgewater State 19-8 as the team wraped up play at The Ripken Experience. Mnahttanville will carry a 3-2 record back up north from South Carolina.

The Bears tagged Valiants pitchers to 21 hits, plating 12 runs across the seventh and eighth innings to pull away with the game and split the two-day series.

It was a slow start for both teams despite what the final score indicated, with one run being scored by each club across the first three innings. Manhattanville scored in the tope of the first after a Brian Bornkamp (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) and Frank Delgado (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) double steal was successful and resulted in a throwing error, allowing Bornkamp to come home with the first run. The Bears evened the score in the bottom half on a Kyle Suraci sac fly.

The Bears went ahead 4-1 in the fourth off a Scott Emerson RBI single followed by a two run double off the bat of Riley Thornell. Bridgewater State would put another three spot on the board an inning later with a trio of unearned runs after an error prolonged the inning.

Trailing 7-1, Manhattanville chipped into the lead by scoring four runs in top of the sixth. Delgado led off the inning with a double and would score following a pair of wild pitches. Tyler Mandel (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale) would also be the beneficiary of a pitcher not able to find the zone as he drew and walk and advanced around the base paths on three wild pitches. Jake Parisi (Centereach, N.Y./Centereach) brought Michael Musantry (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) home on a sacrifice fly before Michael Matica (Pleasantville, N.Y./Pleasantville) laced a single to right to plate Braden Kunda (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester). Despite getting just two hits in the inning, the Valiants were right back in the game, now trailing 7-5.

Despite Manhattanville scratching out the runs, the Bears regained separation in the seventh on a pair of home runs. Matthew Pigeon led off the inning with a solo shot to right before Dan Jasmin hit a three run bomb later in the frame to put the Bears up 11-5.

The Valiants responded with three more runs in their next turn at-bat. After Musantry led off the top of the eighth with a double, Kunda brought his home two batters later with a triple to right. It would be yet another wild pitch that allowed Kunda to score later in the inning before Joshua Gillison (Buchanan, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) deliver an RBI single off the bench to score Matica as Manhattanville once again made a game of things, down 11-8 with an inning left to play.

While Manhattanville fought hard to keep pace with Bridgewater State all game long, the Bears took advantage of a gassed team in the bottom of the eighth as they plated eight runs on seven hits to pull away for good. Manhattanville had no answer to the offensive eruption, going down in order in the ninth to bring an end to the trip.

Matthew Messina (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) was saddled with the loss for Manhattanville, going 3.1 innings in the start. The senior was charged with four runs on six hits and three walks while striking out four. Myles Durney (Port Chester, N.Y./Port Chester) was first out of the pen, allowing three unearned runs in his inning of work. Sean Demo (Cape May, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) allowed a run in 1.2 innings while Travis Brescia (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) was tagged for three runs in his inning while striking out two. Jack Taggart (Levittown, N.Y./Division Avenue) and Ryan McCann (Medford, N.Y./Longwood) both made an appearance in the eighth inning.
