KINGS POINT, N.Y. – The Manhattanvillle College women's lacrosse team was defeated for the first time in 2023 on Saturday afternoon, dropping a 19-5 contest at the United State Merchant Marine Academy. With the loss, the Valiants fall to 7-1 on the season and 0-1 to start conference play.
On a day where the Valiant offense was limited to a season-low 19 shots, the Mariners were off to a hot start scoring six goals to start the first quarter. Samantha Atwood and Jaqui Sheedy would get a pair apiece while Lauren Jablonowski and Jenna Turrentine would each score one goal.
Ally Petricca (New Hyde Park, N.Y./New Hyde Park Memorial) would get Manhattanville on the board with 3:19 left in the quarter.
Maura Kelly (Stratford, Conn./Bunnell) would follow up with one of her own with 1:07 left.
Heading into the second quarter, USMMA would score eight goals and hold the Valiants scoreless. Jablonowski and Turrentine would get three more on the day while Gianna Russo and Julia Coughlin would each get their first.
Coming back from halftime, Sheedy would get the ball rolling scoring only 45 seconds into play. Atwood, Turrentine, and Jablonowski would each get one more as Emma Barnes would get her first of the day for the Mariners. The Valiants would be held scoreless through another quarter.
In the final 15 minutes of regulation, Manhattanville would hold USMMA scoreless as the Valiants would show some determination for a possible comeback.
Marisa D'Angelo (Wantagh, N.Y./MacArthur) would score two goals back-to-back as Kelly would get her second of the day with 2:48 left. It would be the team's first loss of the season.
The Mariners outshot the Valiants 34-19 through 60 minutes. In net,
Britney Sirota (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) would make 10 saves on shots fired her way.
Despite the loss, Manhattanville held the advantage in draw controls, winning 14 draws to Merchant Marine's 12.
Kerry Carr (New Hartford, N.Y./Millbrook School) had a team-high seven draw controls, while Kelly tallied four and
Abbey Playle (Reading, England/Leigh High School) added three. D'Angelo led the team with eight shots taken with six on goal.
The Valiants will be back at home for their Morgan's Message game against Maritime College on Tuesday, Apr. 4 at 7 p.m.
