PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College baseball team split a Skyline Conference doubleheader on Saturday against Mount Saint Vincent, serving as the road team on their home field in Purchase. After falling 2-1 in the opening game pitching duel, the Valiants took the finale in extras with a five-run tenth inning to snap a four-game losing streak with a 10-5 win. Manhattanville now sits at 10-14 overall and remains at .500 in conference play with a 4-4 record.
Game One Recap: Manhattanville 1, Mount Saint Vincent 2
The Valiants outhit the Dolphins 6-5 in the opener, but Mount Saint Vincent was able to plate a run in the fourth and sixth to take the seven-inning header.
TJ Fuerst (Purchase, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) got the start on the rubber for the Valiants, going four innings deep. The sophomore allowed just three hits and a pair of walks while striking out four. Despite his strong performance, he would leave the game trailing as a result of an unearned run in the fourth as a passed ball allowed the Dolphins to break up the scoreless tie as Jake Pierre raced home from third to put the Dolphins up 1-0.
The score held steady until the Valiants finally broke through in the sixth. After
Braden Kunda (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester) drew a one-out walk,
Chris Goohs (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown H.S. East) singled to center field. The junior Kunda showed off his wheels, racing all the way around the bases to score the tying run.
The Dolphins were quick to get back on top in the bottom half with a two-out rally. A walk and a single put runners on the corner against
Jay Lockwood (Stamford, Conn./Stamford).
Tommy Iazzetta (Thornwood, N.Y./Westlake) was called in from the pen with the task of stranding the inherited runners, but he was greeted by a single off the bat of Jason Albert that brought home what would be the winning run. Lockwood would be charged with the run and, in turn, the loss, falling to 0-1 overall. The junior went 1.2 total innings.
The Valiants threatened in the seventh by getting a pair of runners aboard on two walks, but three Dolphin pitchers combined to get the final three outs and secure the win in the opener.
Goohs and
Marco Clara (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) finished with two hits each in the loss. Goohs would add a pair of steals.
Game Two Recap: Manhattanville 10, Mount Saint Vincent 5 (10 Innings)
After squandering their lead late, the Valiants plated five runs in the tenth to earn the doubleheader split and win the backend in extras.
The Valiants led by as many as four runs through the opening nine innings, but the Dolphins rallied to tied the game at 5-5 in the eighth.
Manhattanville wasted little time in the extra frame, plating five runs on four hits. With a pair on and one away,
Brian Bornkamp (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) doubled to left to plate
Jordan Wazolek (Yonkers, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) from second.
Gabe Astrologo (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic Prep) then delivered a single to center to score
Michael Matica (Pleasantville, N.Y./Pleasantville) and Bornkamp to go up 8-5. The Caliants would work the bases loaded before
CJ Archul (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) plated Astrologo on a single and
Tyler Mandel (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale) raced home on a wild pitch to cap off the tenth inning rally. The Dolphins threatened some one-out magic of their own, loading the bases in the bottom half, but
Matthew Messina (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) came on in relief and immediately recorded a game-ending double play.
Prior to the extra inning excitement, the Valiants got on the board initially in the second after a Bornkamp bases loaded walk brought home
Joseph McDonald (Coram, N.Y./Longwood), while Astrologo hit a sac fly to score Matica.
Joshua Gillison (Buchanan, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) added an RBI double that plated Mandel in the fifth before the Dolphins got on the board in the bottom half of the inning. The one run in the fifth was the only damage done to starter
Ray White (Mohegan Lake, N.Y./Lakeland), who went 4.1 innings, allowing the run on four hits and a pair of walks while striking out one.
The Valiants built upon their lead over the next two innings with a Bornkamp sac fly in the sixth and a Mandel solo shot in the seventh put Manhattanville up 5-1. Mount Saint Vincent began to claw back in the bottom of the seventh as the Dolphins drew three bases loaded walks with
Travis Brescia (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) on the mound to cut the lead down to one run.
Iazzetta made his second appearance of the day to get the final out of the seventh, but the Dolphins chased him in the eighth following a hit by pitch and a walk. The Dolphins would greet
Myles Durney (Port Chester, N.Y./Port Chester) out of the pen with a Danny DiNorcia RBI single that tied the game even at 5-5. The Dolphins got the go-ahead run up to third but would be unable to cash in, sending the game to the ninth and ultimately extras where the Valiants would do their damage.
Myles Durney (Port Chester, N.Y./Port Chester) would earn the win, pitching two innings of relief. The senior scattered three hits and a walk across his appearance while striking out a batter before giving way to Messina when things got sticky in the tenth.
Five different Valiants had two hits in the win, with Bornkamp and Astrologo both driving in three runs on their pair of hits. Mandel scored a team-high three runs.
