NEWBURGH, N.Y. – On Sunday afternoon, the Manhattanville College men's lacrosse team was defeated by Mount Saint Mary College, 15-7. With the loss, the Valiants fall to 4-8 overall on the season and 0-3 in conference play with only four regular season games left before the postseason.
Despite Manhattanville's strong offensive showing with 57 shots compared to Mount Saint Mary's 38, the Knights made the most of their attacking opportunities to earn the win.
It was a slow start for both the Valiants and Knights as almost 12 minutes had gone by in play before either team would get on the board. MSMC's Mike Travers would score his first of the day on a man advantage. Nick Gurello would then tally a goal for himself with 4:04 remaining in the quarter to put the Knights up, 2-0.
Drew Palladino (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) would respond for the Valiants with a goal to close out the first 15 minutes, down 2-1.
Mount Saint Mary would hold Manhattanville scoreless through the second quarter while the Valiants were only able to fire off seven shots. Travers would score three in the period as Ryan Olmstead and Xavier Rodriguez would each score one with a man-up. At halftime, the Knights would lead 7-1.
The Valiants would have a dominant third quarter, getting three unassisted goals from
Jesse McGrath (Walden, N.Y./Valley Central),
Tyler Berch (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset), and
Frank Tallerico (Monroe Township, N.J./Monroe Township) to begin the half. Rodriguez would get his second of the day to keep the Knights up 8-4 with 5:33 remaining in the quarter. McGrath and Berch would then go back-to-back before Travers would score another for a 9-6 score going into the final 15 minutes of regulation.
The Knights would score five straight goals to start the fourth quarter from Sal Gallucci, Rodriguez, and three from Travers. McGrath would score his 25
th goal of the season with 1:24 remaining for a score of 14-7, Mount Saint Mary. With only six seconds to go, Travers would score his final goal of the game with nine total through the contest.
In net,
Joe Ulzheimer (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) got his fifth start of the season and would play the full 60 minutes. The rookie goalkeeper would make nine saves and allow 15 goals. He currently sits with a 14.22 goals-against average and .513 save percentage.
For the Valiants,
Nick Padovani (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) won 12 faceoffs while grabbing a team-high nine ground balls.
Matt Bundy (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) tallied five, as 12 other players had at least one.
Sal DeBenedetto (Old Tappan, N.J./Northern Valley Old Tappan) caused a team-high four turnovers while eight others caused one.
