Shinstine's Sixth Career No-Hitter Highlights Sunday as Softball Wins 14th Straight

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College softball team plated 23 runs and tossed their second no-hitter of the season on Sunday as the Valiants continue to rack up wins, sweeping Saint Joseph's Long Island to make it 14 straight games without a loss. The Valiants improve to 18-4 overall and 6-0 in the Skyline with the pair of victories.

Game One Recap: Manhattanville 13, Saint Joseph's 0 (Five Innings)
For the second time this season and sixth time for her collegiate career, Charli Shinstine (Encinitas, Calif./San Dieguito Academy) tossed a no-hitter to lead the way to victory in Sunday's festivities.

In her five inning complete game, the senior Shinstine allowed just two baserunners on a pair of walks in the third. Those would be the only batters to reach against her in the contest as she struck out ten. Shinstine brought her season strikeout total to 104 with the performance, the third straight year that he has posted 100 punchouts.

As Shinstine dealt, the Valiants plated each of their 13 runs over the first three innings to win the game via run rule in the fifth. The offense was quick to cash in with five runs in the first, collecting four hits and capitalizing on three Saint Joseph's errors. After Jayleen Torres (Bellflower, Calif./Downey) reached on a leadoff single and stole second and third, Sarah Harker (Irvine, Calif./Irvine) brought home the first run with a triple, coming home to score on the play as the relay throw from the outfield was off target. Amaya Esparza (Descanso, Calif./Granite Hills) doubled to bring up Samantha Walsh (Spring City, Pa./Owen J Roberts). The sophomore rolled over one, but the throw was muffed allowing her to reach safely. Esparza bolted home as Walsh created chaos on the basepaths, advancing to second on the miscue and headed to third where the attempt to nab her sailed out of play, allowing her to score with the fourth run of the inning. Samantha Reyer (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) would bring home the final run in a more conventional method, singling through the hole on the left side to score Juliana Parkes (Victoria, British Columbia, Canada/Belmont Secondary).

The Valiants plated two more in the second. Walsh singled up the middle and advanced to second as an attempt to gun down Esparza at the plate was late to put Manhattanville up 6-0. Walsh then stole third and came home on a wild pitch.

Manhattanville's final offensive burst came in a four hit, six run third inning. Back-to-back doubles off the bats of Reyer and Melissa Lopez (Whittier, Calif./California) plated the first run, with Lopez scoring a batter later on a Torres single to right. Cady Sickler (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) lined an RBI single to left to score Torres, while three batters later, Walsh and Isabella Tansey (San Diego, Calif./University City) drew a pair of bases loaded walks to push the lead up to 12-0. The final run came to score in form of Esparza who came home on a Gonzales ground out.
After the two walks she issued in the third, Shinstine struck out five of the final nine she faced to complete the no-hitter.

Game Two Recap: Manhattanville 10, Saint Joseph's 0 (Five Innings)
Another quick start at the plate in the first allowed the Valiants to keep the offense rolling with a second-straight win by run rule.

Manhattanville would hang six runs on the board in the bottom of the first on three hits and another two Golden Eagle errors. Esparza got the scoring started with a sac fly to score Fasce. A fielding error two batters later allowed Harker to score. Reyer drove in a pair with a single before two more runs came home on Lopez' infield single, giving the Valiants a 6-0 advantage.

Emily Mottoshiski (Craryville, N.Y./Taconic Hills) was the beneficiary of the run support as she recorded her shutout of the season. The sophomore allowed three hits over the five innings while striking out four and issuing no walks. Her ERA continues to fall, now sitting at 4.40 for the season.

After being held in check in the second and third innings, the Valiants scratched out four more runs in the fourth. Walsh drove in Harker with a double, while Esparza came home following a fielding error. Reyer delivered the final blow as she hit into a fielder's choice that scored two more with the bases loaded.

Mottoshiski went back to work in the fifth, getting a pair of outs after the leadoff batter reached on an error. Madison DiPalo dropped a two out single into right, but the Valiants were on the money with the relay throws to tag Elena Serio out between third and home to end the game.
