Baseball Secures Skyline Sweep of Mount Saint Mary

NEWBURGH, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College baseball team swept a Skyline Conference doubleheader against Mount Saint Mary to open up the week on Tuesday afternoon. The 6-5 and 6-4 wins improve the Valiants' record to 15-18 overall on the season and 8-6 in conference play. 
 
Game One Recap: Manhattanville 6, Mount Saint Mary 5
 
It would be a late rally for the Valiants that would lift them past the Knights as Mount Saint Mary would get on the board first with a 4-0 lead in the third inning.
 
Manhattanville would respond with six runs of their own in the fifth inning. Michael Matica (Pleasantville, N.Y./Pleasantville) would single up the middle to bring in two as Marco Clara (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) and Joshua Gillison (Buchanan, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) would both hit doubles resulting in one and two runs batted in, respectively. The Valiants would take a 5-4 lead heading into the sixth. 
 
In the sixth inning, Tyler Mandel (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale) would reach on a fielder's choice to the third baseman where Matica would score to take a 6-4 lead. 
 
The Knights would respond in the bottom of the sixth with only one runs as Manhattanville would secure another conference win. 
 
Ray White (Mohegan Lake, N.Y./Lakeland) would get the start on the mound for the Valiants, pitching five innings and giving up five runs with three earned on five hits. He would strikeout one and walk one before Travis Brescia (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) would pitch two innings of relief to secure the save.
 
Matica would dominate offensively for Manhattanville scoring two runs on one hit and two RBIs, as Gillison would get two hits and two RBIs. 
 
Game Two Recap: Manhattanville 6, Mount Saint Mary 4 
 
The doubleheader finale would be a back-and-forth battle between the Valiants and the Knights. Clara would get Manhattanville on the board early with a sac fly to center field in the top of the first inning. 
 
Mount Saint Mary would respond with one of their own to tie it up in the bottom of the third inning off a sac fly from Devin Tait and he would later take the lead for the Knights with a single up the middle in the fifth inning. 
 
Jake Parisi (Centereach, N.Y./Centereach) would tie it back up at 2-2 after hitting a single to left field. Matica would respond with a single through the right side to bring two runs home and take a 4-2 Manhattanville lead. Mount Saint Mary would show resilience and stick in the game, scoring two more of their own off of a Cullen Roper bunt single and an Anthony Franco single in the sixth. 
 
In the seventh inning, Michael Musantry (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) would double to right center to advance the runners and bring Gabe Astrologo (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic Prep) home. Musantry would then get to third base on a wild pitch as Gillison would get sent home and score for a 6-4 Manhattanville win. 
 
The Valiants and Knights would be held scoreless through the eighth and ninth innings. 
 
TJ Fuerst (Purchase, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) who has played a dominant role these past few games for the Valiants, got the start on the mound and pitching five innings. He gave up two runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and only two walks. Tommy Iazzetta (Thornwood, N.Y./Westlake) and Myles Durney (Port Chester, N.Y./Port Chester) would combine to pitch one inning of relief giving up two runs on three hits. Chris Antonelli (Yonkers, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) would come in and pitch the final three innings of the game, giving up only two hit and striking out two to tally his first save of the season.

The Valiants will head back to their home diamond for a conference doubleheader against Purchase College on Saturday morning, starting at 11 a.m.
