Men's Lacrosse Rolls Past Mount Saint Vincent, 23-8

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College men's lacrosse team opened up the final week of the regular season in dominant fashion, notching a 23-8 win over the College of Mount Saint Vincent on Tuesday afternoon. The win moves the Valiants into fifth in the conference standings with one game to play, sitting at 6-8 overall and 2-4 in Skyline action just one spot behind the final postseason berth.

Ten different Valiants found the back of the net as Manhattanville scored 14 straight goals across the first and second quarters to take dominating command over the contest. The attack was led by six point outings from Sean Larkin (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains) and Nick Cornelia (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst), who posted matching statlines of five goals and an assist. Jesse McGrath (Walden, N.Y./Valley Central) finished with five points, four of which came off of goals. His first point of the night, a goal with 3:13 left in the opening quarter, brought the grad student up to 100 for his collegiate career.

Larkin's first of the night from Drew Palladino (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) got the scoring started at the 10:14 mark. Frank Tallerico (Monroe Township, N.J./Monroe Township) added a tally for the Valiants before the Dolphins netted their first of the game from Andrew Dzubak with 8:38 left on the clock. From there, it would be all Valiants for the next 17-plus minutes as Manhattanville went on their string of 14 unanswered goals. To close out the first, Manhattanville received a pair of goals from Larkin and McGrath while Tyler Berch (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) and Cornelia added one each. Through 15 minutes, the Vals led 8-1.

The streak continued well into the second as Manhattanville scored the first eight goals of the quarter. Larkin, McGrath and Cornelia each scored twice while James Weinbaum (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) and Anthony Mesi (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) scored one apiece. The scoring barrage made it a 16-1 lead in favor of the Valiants before Jacob Cochran finally put an end to the run with 2:25 left in the half. Cornelia and Gio Jean-Pharuns would end the half by trading goals, making the score 17-4 through 30 minutes.

Adrian Guillermo struck first in the third for the Dolphins before Cornelia scored from Weinbaum and Dom Janavey (Shrub Oak, N.Y./Lakeland) netted a tally off a feed from Sal DeBenedetto (Old Tappan, N.J./Northern Valley Old Tappan). Dzubak added his second of the night for Mount Saint Vincent ahead of Mesi and Dylan Foley (Northport, N.Y./Northport) scoring for Manhattanville The teams would each score once more to close the quarter, with JP Harris (Boynton Beach, Fla./American Heritage School) scoring for the Valiants with 24 seconds remaining, putting the Valiants up 22-6.

Berch concluded the Valiant attack display with his second of the night with 11:15 remaining in regulation. Jean-Pharuns and Dzubak would find the back of the net for the guests before a scoreless 8:30 closed out the game for a 23-8 Manhattanville victory.

The Valiants split goaltending duties across four keepers in the one-sided affair. Joe Ulzheimer (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) made the start, stopping five shots and allowing one goal in his 23:24 of playing time. Cody Johnston (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) was the first to come in off the bench, as he played 21:12 with ten saves and five goals allowed. Mike Hopkins (Bedford, N.Y./Fox Lane) and Elijah Bell (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) would split time in the fourth quarter, combining for five saves.

Nick Padovani (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) won 11 faceoffs and collected seven ground balls, leading the team in both categories. Janavey and Jonhston collected four grounders a piece, while Mike Mooney (Tappan, N.Y./Tappan Zee) caused a team-high three turnovers while collecting three ground balls of his own.
