Softball Wins 20th Straight with Sweep of Sarah Lawrence

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College softball team notched their 20th straight win and their tenth straight doubleheader sweep on Tuesday afternoon, winning a pair of games against Sarah Lawrence. With the victory, the Valiants improve to 24-4 overall on the season and 10-0 in Skyline Conference play.
 
The Valiants outscored the Gryphons 27-0 in the pair of run rule victories, surrendering just one base hit across the two games. In the opener, Charli Shinstine (Encinitas, Calif./San Dieguito Academy) and Samantha Walsh (Spring City, Pa./Owen J Roberts) combined for 13 strikeouts while giving up just one walk. Walsh would get the start in the finale game striking out two and walking one as Emily Mottoshiski (Craryville, N.Y./Taconic Hills) would pitch three innings of relief striking out a season-high eight batters with one walk. 
 
Game One Recap: Manhattanville 14, Sarah Lawrence 0 (Five Innings)
 
A late offensive rally allowed Manhattanville to take the opener of Tuesday's action via run rule in the fifth inning.The Valiants plated nine runs in the third inning to blow the game open with a 12-0 lead, while the Gryphons were unable to even get a hit off of Shinstine or Walsh. 
 
The Valiants would take the lead in the bottom of the first as Sarah Harker (Irvine, Calif./Irvine) would triple to right field bringing Madison Gonzales (Azusa, Calif./Sacred Heart) home. 
 
It would be a slow start for Manhattanville as only two more runs would score in the second inning. Olivia Fasce (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) would ground out to the Gryphons' pitcher but still running in Juliana Parkes (Victoria, British Columbia, Canada/Belmont Secondary) for a 2-0 lead. Jaylee Torres would the reach first on an error by the third baseman as Samantha Reyer (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) would run home to score. 
 
The third inning is where the Valiants' offense exploded. Harker would start off the inning with a home run, her second of the season as Amaya Esparza (Descanso, Calif./Granite Hills) would follow up with one of her own, her fifth home run of the season. Parkes would then double to center field bringing in two runs as Fasce would response with a double and two runs as well. Walsh would hit a sac fly to left field as Gonzales would make it home for a 12-0 lead heading into the fourth inning. 
 
In the fourth, Melissa Lopez (Whittier, Calif./California) would double to left center advancing Gonzales to third and running in Torres and Reyer to secure a 14-0 win .
 
Reyer would lead the Valiants offensively with three runs on three hits as Gonzales would add two runs on three hits and two RBI. Harker would contribute to game one with one run on three hits and one RBI. Fasce would record a team-high three RBI in the doubleheader opener. 
 
Game Two Recap: Manhattanville 13, Sarah Lawrence 0 (Five Innings)
 
The Valiants completed the sweep with 13 runs on 16 hits in the finale of the doubleheader. 
 
It was a quick start for Manhattanville as the team plated seven runs in the first inning. Gonzales would single through the right side as Harker would double to left center and Walsh would single up the middle each tallying an RBI. Two runs would then be walked home with bases loaded before Torres would single to right center and Gonzales would ground out to the shortstop but each driving in a run. The Valiants would lead 7-0 heading into the second inning. 
 
Scoring would be at an abundance for Manhattanville as they plated five through the second. Reyer would single through the left side driving in Sydni Brooks (Anaheim, Calif./Cypress) while Ruby Wilson (Merrimack, N.H./Bishop Guertin) would single to the pitcher advancing the runners and bringing home Walsh. Cady Sickler (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) would single to right field as Torres would single to left center, each recording an RBI. Gonzales would get the final point on the board as she reached on a fielder's choice with Sickler getting home. 
 
Sarah Lawrence's Kristin Vargas would single through the left side for their only hit on the day. The Valiants would go scoreless through the third and fourth innings but come out victorious, 12-0 against the Gryphons. 
 
Torres would dominant at the plate with one run on three hits as Walsh and Wilson would contribute two runs on two hits with one RBI each. Walsh would pitch also two innings, striking out two and walking one while Mottoshiski would pitch three innings of relief striking out a season-high eight batters, giving up one hit and one walk.

The Valiants are back on the home diamond tomorrow as they close out their nonconference schedule with a 3 p.m. doubleheader start against Hunter College.
