Softball Sweeps NYU To Extend Win Streak Up To Eight Games

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College softball team notched their fourth-consecutive doubleheader sweep on Wendesday evening, defeating New York University in a pair of games at the College of Staten Island. With the wins, the Valiants improve to 12-4 overall.

Game One Recap: Manhattanville 11, NYU 3 (Five Innings)
For the fourth time this season, the Valiants won a game via run rule as Manhattanville took the opener in five innings.

After plating a run in each of the first two innings, the Valiant bats erupted for a five spot in the fourth and scored four more in the fifth, hanging 11 runs on the board before the Violets scored once.

Sarah Harker (Irvine, Calif./Irvine) fired the opening salvo with a double in the first that scored Jayleen Torres (Bellflower, Calif./Downey) for the game's first run. In the following inning, Olivia Fasce (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) added an RBI double of her own, scoring Sydni Brooks (Anaheim, Calif./Cypress) to double the Valiant lead up to 2-0.

The score held stagnant until the explosive fourth inning, where the Valiants scored five runs on three hits. Samantha Reyer (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) led off the frame with a double and scored two batters later on a Torres single. The senior put herself in scoring position with steals of second and third base and would score alongside Juliana Parkes (Victoria, British Columbia, Canada/Belmont Secondary) on Harker's two run double to extend the lead up to 5-0. Harker would score on a fielder's choice while Samantha Walsh (Spring City, Pa./Owen J Roberts) scored on a wild pitch to account for the fifth run of the frame.

The Valiants picked up where the left off an inning later with four more runs. Torres laced a double down the left field line to plated Reyer before stealing her fourth base of the contest and crossing the plate on a fielder's choice, extend the Valiant lead up to 9-0. The Skyline Conference's reigning Player of the Week Amaya Esparza (Descanso, Calif./Granite Hills) joined in on the scoring with an RBI single to score Parkes while Harker scurried home on a wild pitch to put the Valiants up 11-0.

As the Valiants kept plating runs, Charli Shinstine (Encinitas, Calif./San Dieguito Academy) continued her dominant season with the complete game effort. The senior allowed just one earned run in five innings, allowing four hits and walking four while striking out three. While her punchout numbers were low by her standards, Shinstine held the Violets scoreless until the fifth when they plated three runs (one earned) on a pair of hits and a Manhattanville error. The final inning was the first time the Valiant ace found trouble as no Violet baserunner had advanced past second base until the fifth. Shinstine remains unbeaten with a perfect 8-0 record on the year.

Game Two Recap: Manhattanville 8, NYU 3
Completing the first doubleheader sweep of NYU since 2001, the Valiant bats got the job done as they plated eight runs across the middle innings to erase a 2-0 first inning hole.

The Violets took their first lead of the twinbill after holding the Valiants scoreless in the top of the first on a two-run Emma Aridi double. Emily Mottoshiski (Craryville, N.Y./Taconic Hills) was able to shrug off the shaky first inning to improve to 4-4 on the year, holding NYU off the board for the next three innings. The sophomore would pitch 4.1 innings and allow three runs on three hits and three walks while striking out one.

Mottoshiski was able to keep the Valiants within striking distance until the offense came through starting in the fourth. After being held to one hit through the first three innings, the Valiants plated three runs on four hits in the inning to take the lead. Isabella Tansey (San Diego, Calif./University City) began a two-out rally with a single to left to score Esparza. Brooks laced a double to center to tie the game before Reyer's triple brought Brooks home with the go-ahead run.

Manhattanville furthered their lead in the fifth, capitalizing on a pair of NYU errors to score three more runs. With the bases loaded, Esparza hit a grounder towards first that was misplayed, allowed Torres to score. Walsh earned a painful RBI with a bases loaded hit by pitch, while Harker scored on a Brooks groundout to put the Valiants up 6-2.

Mottoshiski found trouble in the fifth as an error and pair of walks loaded the bases with one away. Shinstine was tabbed to make a relief appearance and navigate the sticky situation. After issuing a walk to the first batter she faced to bring in a run, Shinstine got a pair of ground outs to limit the damage to one.

Manhattanville added two final runs in the sixth as Cady Sickler (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) hit a lead off double and scored on a pair of wild pitches while Harker hit a solo shot to left for her first home run of the season. From there, Shinstine pitched the final two innings, allowing just one hit and a walk while striking out two to extend Manhattanville's winning streak up to eight straight games.
