THROGGS NECK, N.Y. - On Saturday afternoon, the Manhattanville College men's lacrosse team began conference play with a 17-9 loss against Maritime College. With the loss, the Valiants fall to 4-6 on the season and 0-1 to start Skyline Conference competition.
After Maritime got off to a 4-0 lead to begin the game,
Sean Larkin (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains) would get the Valiants on the board with less than 10 minutes left in the first quarter. The Privateers would use their momentum to notch three more goals, two from Charles Longo and one from the team's leading scorer, Commor Tomich. They would take a 7-1 lead heading into the second quarter.
Martitime would score a goal early in the quarter from Brian Drost before
Drew Palladino (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) would fire one home from
James Weinbaum (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) during a man up play for the Valiants, with 10:41 left in the half. The Privateers' Nick Spista would respond with one of his own as
Nick Cornelia (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) would get his first goal of the day with only 2:13 remaining on the clock. Maritime would hold a 9-3 lead heading into halftime.
Only two minutes back into play, Cornelia tallied another goal for the Valiants. Shortly after, Maritime's Kieran Hendry would score for a 10-4 lead followed by another goal from Longo, Tomich, and Thomas Pellicci to bring the game to the final quarter of regulation.
In the final 15 minutes,
Jesse McGrath (Walden, N.Y./Valley Central) netted his 18
th goal of the season as the Privateers would score three more from Drost, Parker Reilly, and Longo. Manhattanville would then net four goals .in a row from McGrath and Larkin, Weinbaum would be awarded two assists in the run while
Frank Tallerico (Monroe Township, N.J./Monroe Township) would dish one out. With only 17 second left in regulation, Longo would score his seventh and final goal of the game to give Maritime a 17-9 conference win.
Jarod Wilmoth (Harlem, N.Y./Cardinal Hayes) and
Joe Ulzheimer (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) each had a team-high four ground balls, while Palladino and Fransisco Rosas each grabbed three. Larkin, Cornelia, Wilmoth, Rosas,
Mike Mooney (Tappan, N.Y./Tappan Zee), and
Shea Madden (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) each tallied a caused turnover during the contest. Ulzheimer would play the full 60 minutes in net, making a season-high and career-high 19 saves while giving up 17 Maritime goals.
The Valiants will be back at home on Tuesday, Apr. 11 to take on the United States Merchant Marine Academy at 4 p.m.
