Game One Recap: Manhattanville 14, Purchase 0 (Five Innings)
A 16-hit barrage led the Valiants to victory in the opener as the team plated 11 runs across the first two innings.
Following a
Jayleen Torres (Bellflower, Calif./Downey) leadoff walk and
Olivia Fasce (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) bunt single,
Sarah Harker (Irvine, Calif./Irvine) delivered the first of several big blows on the day with a three run homer to center, her third deep fly of the season.
Amaya Esparza (Descanso, Calif./Granite Hills) was hit by a pitch before
Samantha Walsh (Spring City, Pa./Owen J Roberts) drilled a double to left center to put a pair in scoring position. Esparza scored on a passed ball while Walsh was able to dart home a batter later with the fifth run as a return throw to the pitcher sailed into the outfield.
Not quite content with their display in the first, the Valiants scored six more runs an inning later on six hits and a Purchase error. Torres led off a second straight inning, this time hitting a double and stealing third. Fasce made quick work to bring her home with a single to left before Esparza drilled her tenth home run of the season, a two run shot to center. It would not be the only homer of the inning as four batters later, Reyer smacked one over the center field fence with a three run blast. It was her third home run of the season, putting the Valiants up 11-0.
Charli Shinstine (Encinitas, Calif./San Dieguito Academy) was up to her usual tricks, pitching three no-hit innings. She recorded eight of her nine outs by strikeout, while only allowing a baserunner as a result of an error.
Walsh finished the job in the circle by throwing the final two innings in relief, allowing just one hit while striking out one.
The Valiants added another three runs on five hits in the fourth. After leadoff singles by
Sydni Brooks (Anaheim, Calif./Cypress) and
Juliana Parkes (Victoria, British Columbia, Canada/Belmont Secondary),
Melissa Lopez (Whittier, Calif./California) doubled to left center to score the lead runner. Madison Gonzalez then hit an RBI single to right before Cadi Sickler brought home the 14
th and final run of the affair two batters later with a single up the middle.
In total, 11 different batters recorded a hit in the win. Parkes ended the contests 3-for-3, while Torres, Fasce and Walsh each had a pair of hits.
Game Two Recap: Manhattanville 14, Purchase 0 (Five Innings)
A nine-spot in the first inning had the Valiants continue their torrid hitting as they plated another 14 runs to complete the sweep.
Seven hits and a pair of Panther errors led to the explosive opening inning. Harker lined a two-run triple to get the scoring started. Two batters later, Brooks lined a two run single up the middle before racing home on a Parkes triple the following at-bat.
Isabella Tansey (San Diego, Calif./University City) hit a sacrifice fly out to center to score Parkes before another run came across the plate as the lineup flipped over with Torres' second hit of the inning. Torres stole second and third before scoring on a Fasce single before the final run would come across as Harker's fly to deep right field was dropped, allowing Fasce to score and put the home team comfortably in front 9-0.
Gonzalez drove in another run in the third on a single to plate Sickler before Harker hit her second homer of the day in the fourth, another three run blast to move the score to 14-0.
Emily Mottoshiski (Craryville, N.Y./Taconic Hills) allowed just three hits in her shutout five innings as she notched her 12
th win of the year. The sophomore struck out three en route to the win, needing only 56 pitches to get through the game. Mottoshiski's ERA continues to fall, now sitting at a season-low 3.08.
Brooks finished the game 3-for-4 at the dish. Torres, Fasce and Harker joined her with multi-hit performances to complete the sweep.
