Softball Sweeps Farmingdale to Complete Perfect 18-0 Skyline Regular Season

Valiants' 30th straight win secures the team No. 1 seed for Skyline Conference Tournament

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College softball team concluded their dominant regular season on Sunday afternoon as the Valiants extended Division III's longest-active winning streak up to an even 30 games with a sweep of Farmingdale State. With the doubleheader wins, Manhattanville claimed the Skyline Conference regular season championship and secured the No. 1 seed for the Conference Championship which will now be hosted in Purchase. The Valiants head into the postseason 34-4 overall and finish undefeated in conference play for the first time since 2017, going 18-0 against the Skyline this year.

Game One Recap: Manhattanville 9, Farmingdale 0 (Five Innings)
In the first meeting between the top two teams in the conference, the Valiants snapped Farmingdale's own impressive 19-game winning streak and held the Rams scoreless for the first time all year.

Charli Shinstine (Encinitas, Calif./San Dieguito Academy) put the finishing touches on her incredible regular season with another complete game shutout as the ace held Farmingdale to just two hits. Shinstine walked a pair and hit a batter with a pitch, but six strikeouts and strong defensive play behind her allowed the senior fireballer to improve to 19-0 overall as her ERA drops to a miniscule 0.66 on the year.

Despite the strong final line, Shinstine was tested immediately in her first inning. After the Valiants were kept off the board in the top of the first, the Rams threatened by loading the bases with one away thanks to a hit by pitch, walk and fielder's choice that resulted in everyone being safe. Facing the traffic on the basepaths, Shinstine was able to get a popup out off a bunt before ending the inning with a strikeout looking to keep Farmingdale scoreless.

The Rams would be unable to get a runner past second base for the remainder of the contest as the Valiant bats put a hurting on Allie Stanya in the third. Manhattanville scored eight runs on six hits and a pair of Farmingdale errors to blow up what was a scoreless tie. With two gone, Amaya Esparza (Descanso, Calif./Granite Hills) drew a walk to load the bases. Samantha Walsh (Spring City, Pa./Owen J Roberts) would bring home the first run in a painful manner, getting hit by a pitch to force home Jayleen Torres (Bellflower, Calif./Downey). Sydni Brooks (Anaheim, Calif./Cypress) then cleared the bases with a three run double to center to put Manhattanville up 4-0.

The two-out rally continued as Juliana Parkes (Victoria, British Columbia, Canada/Belmont Secondary) skied one out to left. The fly ball was dropped, allowing Brooks to score as the inning continued. Samantha Reyer (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) brought home her classmate with a single up the middle while two batters later, Torres delivered the final strike of the inning, a two run single that plated Reyer and Melissa Lopez (Whittier, Calif./California) to put the Valiants ahead by eight.

The Rams got their two base hits in the bottom of the third as they attempted to mount a response to the Valiants' explosive inning. Shinstine worked around the two singles to strand the pair of runners. From there, it would be six up, six down to close out the game.

The Valiants added an insurance run in the fifth on Reyer's double to plate Parkes. Shinstine got a pair of strikeouts in her 1-2-3 fourth before making quick work in the fifth, getting a pop out, line out and fly out to invoke the run rule and take the opener.

Lopez finished the game a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate. The Valiants successfully nabbed three bases, with Olivia Fasce (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) stealing two while the conference's leading stealer Torres added one.

Game Two Recap: Manhattanville 2, Farmingdale 0
The Valiants closed out their perfect 18-0 conference season with another shutout of Farmingdale on the back of strong pitching and a pair of early runs.

The lone runs of the pitching duel came in the first inning. After a double play erased a leadoff double from Torres, Sarah Harker (Irvine, Calif./Irvine) drew a walk. Esparza joined her on the bases with a hit by pitch, bringing Walsh up to the plate. The sophomore drove a single down the right field line to plate Harker before Esparza scored on a wild pitch in the following at-bat to give Emily Mottoshiski (Craryville, N.Y./Taconic Hills) a 2-0 lead before stepping into the circle.

From there, the sophomore pitcher dealt a seven inning complete game shutout. Mottoshiski allowed just four hits and a walk while holding the Rams scoreless. As has been her calling card this season, Mottoshiski found success keeping the ball out of the air, getting 14 groundouts along with one strikeout.

Farmingdale had their best chance to get into the run column in the third inning. After a pair of quick outs, Jenna Giliberti legged out an infield single before stealing second. Priscilla Rivera singled into shallow right, with the Valiants getting the ball back in quickly to hold Giliberti at third. With the runners on the corners, Mottoshiski escaped the jam with a lineout snagged by Torres at the hot corner.

The Rams would be held to just two more baserunners for the remainder of the game after their opportunity in the third. A single in the fifth and a walk in the sixth amounted to nothing as Mottoshiski masterfully dealt with the runners to close the door on the team's 30th consecutive win.

Mottoshiski lowered her ERA to 2.66 with the win, improving to 15-4 overall.

The Valiants were held to just four hits in the game, their second-fewest all season and their lowest in a win all year. Esparza and Lopez joined Walsh and Torres in the hit column in the contest.
