OSWEGO, N.Y. – Making their season debut on the shores of Lake Ontario, the Manhattanville College field hockey team was defeated in the 2023 opener by a final of 5-2 at Oswego State. The non-conference loss will have the Valiants open the year with a 0-1 record.
Making her return to the field she called home for four years as an undergraduate, it was not the final result head coach
Katie Reynolds was hoping for to open up her second campaign at the helm of the Valiants. A four goal first half by the home team Lakers put Manhattanville into too steep of a hole to climb out of.
Oswego opened up the scoring with a pair of tallies in the opening 3:46, scoring twice in a 34 second span. Kate McNally opened up the Lakers' scoring for the year on an assist by Molly Darcy before Erin Schaefer struck soon after to spot the home squad a two goal advantage.
The Valiants recorded their first tally of 2023 with 11:38 gone in the opening period. It would be a grad student connection as
Megan Keaveney (Clarkstown, N.Y./Clarkstown South) finished off a feed from
Felicity Williams (Glens Falls, N.Y./Glens Falls) to cut the deficit in half.
The Lakers were able to regain some distance with a pair of unanswered goals in the second quarter as McNally struck again just 28 seconds into the quarter while Maddie Pflume closed out the half with her first of the season at the 26:39 mark.
Following a scoreless third quarter of action, Keaveney struck again in the closing minutes of the contest with an unassisted goal with 5:39 left in regulation. That would be all for the Valiant attack as the team was held to just one other shot across the closing 15 minutes of play. Molly Darcy capped off the night for the Lakers with a penalty shot goal as the clock expired.
Making her season debut in the cage,
Lidia Vasquez-Sinisi (Selden, N.Y./Newfield) played a full 60 minutes in goal. The sophomore logged six saves, setting a new career high in the process.
The Lakers dominated offensive opportunities, outshooting the Valiants 14-7 while taking 17 penalty corners compared to Manhattanville's three.
Alyssa Monahan (East Fishkill, NY/John Jay High School) joined Keaveney and Williams with a team-high two shots.
Shannon Keena (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) joined in the offensive effort with a shot in her collegiate debut.
