NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Manhattanville College field hockey team snapped a four-game skid on Wednesday afternoon, edging out Albertus Magnus 4-3 on the road. The win improves the Valiants' record on the season to 2-5.
After being limited to just two goals total across their last four games, the Valiant attack was able to capitalize on opportunities on Wednesday with the four goals, their second-most in a game this season.
The Valiants outshot the Falcons 4-1 in the opening quarter, but both teams were held scoreless across the first 15 minutes. Albertus Magnus ultimately struck first as Maddy Gootjes fired a shot past
Cat Morgan (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay Senior) from Kayla Clark to put the home team up 1-0 in the 19
th minute.
The tally would come on one of the two shots Albertus would log in the quarter, with the Valiants once again outshooting the home squad by a 5-2 margin in the period. The offensive pressure would finally break through in the 24
th minute as
Keira Guinan (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) buried a
Felicity Williams (Glens Falls, N.Y./Glens Falls) pass into the back of the cage past Falcon goalie Samantha Helwig to tie the game up.
It would take just two minutes before Guinan struck again, this time assisted by the way of
Taylor Benedetto (East Yaphank, N.Y./William Floyd) who set her freshman classmate up with the ball right on the doorstep of the goal. Guinan was able to put the ball past Helwig in the close proximity to put Manhattanville ahead 2-0 with four minutes to go until the half. Guinan now ranks second on the team with three goals on the year.
The Valiants continued to have the upper hand offensively in the third as they outshot Albertus Magnus 6-1 in the 15 minutes out of halftime. Williams would account for the lone tally of the quarter off an
Alyssa Monahan (East Fishkill, NY/John Jay High School) assist that put Manhattanville up 3-1 heading into the closing quarter of action.
The Falcons had their best offensive quarter in the fourth with four shots and three penalty corners, trying desperately to secure their first win of the year. Gootjes cut the deficit down to one just one minute into the quarter off a corner. While the Falcons would get two more corner opportunities and a shot on goal as the period progressed,
Alyssa Damore (Pawling, N.Y./Pawling) provided a huge insurance tally with her first collegiate goal with 9:12 left in regulation.
Albertus Magnus was able to respond soon after as Melina Tarzia once again pulled the Falcons back within a goal with 7:44 remaining. The Valiants defensive unit bent but refused to break, holding Albertus to just one more shot in the remainder of the contest. Kayla Clark attempted to bury the equalizer with 31 seconds remaining, but
Florence Harrison (Melbourne, Australia/Balwyn High School) turned away the shot to secure the Valiant win.
Morgan and Harrison split netminding duties, with Morgan earning the starting nod. The senior played 37:14 in the cage, making a pair of saves while allowing one goal. Her goals-against average dips to 1.93 with a 0.774 save percentage on the season. Harrison, meanwhile, collected her first win of the year with a pair of saves in her 22:46 of action while surrendering a pair of tallies. The junior had a 2.30 GAA on the year with a .769 save percentage.
Williams fired a team-high eight shots in the contest, putting a pair on net. She was joined by Guinan and Benedetto with two shots on goal. Monahan added three shot attempts for the Valiants.
Manhattanville held an 11-8 advantage in the penalty corner department.
