PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College men's soccer team fought to a 1-1 draw against Kean for the home opener at GoValiants.com Field on Sunday afternoon. This result marks the first time in recorded school history the Valiants have started 0-0-2.
The Cougars paced the shooting department, with an 18-7 shot disparity, although both squads netted two shots on goal. Kean also controlled the corner kick statistics with eight in favor of the Valiants two.
As Manhattanville looked to control the pace of play, passing around their back line, Kean started the contest off with three shots in the beginning ten minutes, all missing the target.
After thirty-seven minutes of back-and-forth action, a tackle in the Cougars' defensive third led to a link-up in the midfield as Donte East found himself past the Valiants back line, beating the rushing keeping and slotting it into the bottom left corner for the 1-0 lead.
The first half would end with both teams trading yellow cards, first for Manttanville's
Jostyn Blanco (Norwalk, CT/Brien Mcmahon High School) in the 43
rd minute and then Kean's Alejandro Venereo a couple of minutes later leading into the half.
The Valiants looked to up their tempo in the second half, as right out of the gates they fired off two shots, both of which missed the netting. Midfielder
Matt Rabadi (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) would pick up the third booking of the contest in the 50
th minute.
Both squads would trade misses and fouls, leading to an eventual carding in the final minutes of the contest.
Manhattanville found their chance to level the score when
Sebastian Testa (Clermont, Fla./East Ridge) found himself on the backline, being given a ball into the box, and on the receiving end of a bad challenge resulting in a penalty kick. Testa stepped up to the spot and buried it into the top netting, leveling the score at 1-1.
Following a few more cards, the 1-1 result would hold as the final chance for the Cougars was to no avail.
Coming off his clean sheet in the season-opener against Stevens,
Luis Granados (Pasadena, Calif./St. Francis) finished Sunday's action with one save in a full 90 mintues in net.
