Women's Volleyball Drops a Pair at Kean Invitational

UNION, N.J. – The Manhattanville College women's volleyball team was bested in both ends of their trimatch at the Kean Invitational on Friday night. The Valiants fell to the hosting Kean Cougars 3-1 before dropping a three set affair against Gettysburg. The pair of losses moves Manhattanville's record to 2-4 overall.

Match One Recap: Manhattanville 1, Kean 3 (25-23, 18-25, 12-25, 14-25)
Match stats were not available at time of writing.

Match Two Recap: Manhattanville 0, Gettysburg 3 (14-25, 21-25, 15-25)
The Valiants struggled to keep up with the Bullets' .322 hitting percentage in the match as Gettysburg took the finale of Friday's action in a three set sweep.

Loren Hernandez (Toa Baja, Puerto Rico/American Military Academy) led the Manhattanville attack effort with nine kills, while Meghan Wildes (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) finished with five. Vianca Vital (Carolina, Puerto Rico/Perpetuo Socorro) collected 18 assists and was tied with Grace Ballagas (Carolina, Puerto Rico/Robinson School) with seven digs to lead the team. Kayla Jennings (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Lakeland) also dug out five balls.

With the score evened at 4-all to open up the set, Gettysburg went on a 9-4 run to gain separation with a 13-8 lead. The Valiants would be unable to string together multiple points for the remainder of the frame as the Bullets continued to build upon their lead, eventually claiming set one with a 25-14 final.

Manhattanville fared significantly better in keeping up with Gettysburg in the second set, but nine attacking errors limited the Valiants' opportunities to capitalize on the Bullets' own hitting struggles. After another 4-4 start to things, the Bullets staked claim to a small two point advantage before Manhattanville fought things even at 6-all, the first of four quick succession tied scored. Gettysburg would soon go on a big four point run to go up 13-9 with Manhattanville unable to close the gap for the remainder of the set. The Bullets threatened to run away with a second-straight frame, leading 21-15, but the Valiants showed off some resiliency by going on a 6-2 run to claw back to a 23-21 score. It would ultimately prove to be too little, too late as Gettysburg held one to rattle off the final two points, 25-21.

The Bullets logged a match-high 17 kills in the third set to complete the sweep. As was the case with the previous two frames, the teams found themselves tied 4-4 to begin the action. After the score moved to 6-6, Gettysburg went on a 13-3 run that put the set out of reach. The Valiants were able to piece together a string of three unanswered points to move the deficit to 19-12, but the Bullets scored six of the final nine points to take the set and the match, 25-15.

Up Next
The Valiants have a week to prepare for their return to action when they head to Danbury next Friday. Manhattanville plays three matches in two days over at WestConn, starting with a neutral site matchup against Morrisville State at 8 p.m.
