Women's Hockey Collects Point in Shootout Loss at King's

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Playing the first of 12 straight conference matchups to conclude the regular season, the Manhattanville College women's hockey team earned a point on the road on Friday night, drawing with King's by a final of 2-2 before falling in the shootout. The Valiants put an end to a four game losing streak with the decision, moving to 3-9-2 overall and 3-4-2 in the UCHC.

The Valiants struck in the first after Abby Barlocker was sent to the box for hooking at 11:00. Manhattanville wasted little time with the extra skater as Annie Niedermier (Calgary, Alberta, Canada/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame) took the ensuing faceoff. The Monarchs won the draw, but the clearing attempt was intercepted by Erin Flaherty (Rockland, Mass./Canterbury School). The rookie rifled a shot from outside the circles towards the direction of Niedermier, setting up shop outside the Monarch crease. The Valiant junior forward deflected the puck past goaltender Syd Dahl to put the Valiants up 1-0.

Scoring picked up in the second as King's capitalized on Manhattanville penalties to the tune of a pair of power play goals. The Monarchs evened the game up at 1-1 at 5:07 after a tripping call on Cassidy Elvidge (Durham, Ontario/Post University) put Manhattanville down a skater. Lucy Beal had a shot blocked by Charlotte Stanwood (West Vancouver, B.C./Penticton Secondary) and a followup go wide before Issy Lebrun fired a shot home from Beal to tie the game.

Manhattanville retook the lead four minutes later. Sandwiched along the boards, Jada McKinnon was able to muscle the puck to Catrina Chinetti (Hyde Park, Mass./Boston Latin Academy) outside the offensive zone. The sophomore split the Monarch defense all by her lonesome and fired a wrister to the lower left corner of the net to spot the Vals a 2-1 lead. However, penalties once again hindered the Valiants as Niedermier was called for a hold at 13:44. Beal scored on the Monarchs' first shot of the power play to knot things up once again at 2-2, where the score would hold entering the third period.

A scoreless third period sent the contest to overtime, but it was a battle for Manhattanville to send the game to the extra period. The Valiants were assessed four penalties in the period, including a brief 5-on-3 look for King's. Jewells Austin (Bethlehem, CT/Nonnewaug High School) and the Valiant defense held strong as Manhattanville's junior netminder stopped all seven shots she faced in the period to hold the score even.

The Valiants survived the storm of third period penalties but began overtime killing off the remainder of a too many players on the ice call charged with two seconds left in regulation. Austin made a pair of saves before the ice was back to even after a King's holding call. The Valiants had a minute of a 4-on-3 advantage and got shots off the sticks of Chinetti and Lulu LePage (Swansea, Mass./Elmira College) but both were turned away by Dahl. The teams played even for the final 2:06 of overtime with King's generating all three of the final shots on goal, but Austin remained strong in the crease to force the shootout.

Amanda Sokol provided the shootout winner for the Monarchs as the home team won the skills competition 2-1. Grace Felicio (Holden, Mass./Wachusett Regional) and Barlocker each scored in the first round, while Harper Weisbeck (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Sutherland) and Beal were both denied in the second. Niedermier was the last chance for the Valiants, but Dahl made the stop in the final round to nab the extra point for King's.

Austin finished with 25 saves in her second appearance of the season, playing all 65 minutes. Her record moves to 0-1-1 with a 2.91 goals against average for the year.

The Monarchs won 36 of the game's 62 faceoffs. Neidermier was the Valiants' faceoff leader with 13 wins.

Manhattanville's power play finished 1-for-4 on the night with four total shots. After surrendering power play goals on their first two looks, the Valiant penalty kill successfully held King's scoreless on its final four chances with the extra skater. The Monarchs finished 2-for-6 with six total shots.
