Men’s Hockey Gets Back in Win Column; Splits Series Against Nazareth

RYE, N.Y. - Using an offensive explosion, the Manhattanville College men's hockey team collected their first win since Dec. 2nd, defeating Nazareth 5-1 and splitting the series with the Golden Flyers on Saturday afternoon at Playland Ice Casino.

Manhattanville would score the opening three goals, holding Nazareth without a goal through the first 32:53 of play.

The Valiants would open the scoring in the first period with 08:19 elapsed, as found his third goal of the season off a feed from Lane Paddison (100 Mile House, Canada/Canmore Eagles (AJHL)), who had himself an excellent day on the ice. Ryan McKenna (Spokane, Wash./Sheridan Hawks (NA3HL)) would later light the lamp on a short-handed goal when Caden Eaton (Indian River, Mich./Cornwall Colts (CCHL)) found himself on a fastbreak opportunity, dishing it across the ice to McKenna who beat the Golden Flyers netminder. The Valiants weren't done scoring in the first period, as just under two minutes later Nicholas Rogers (Broad Channel, N.Y./Danbury Jr. Hat Tricks (NA3HL)) sounded the horn, finishing off a feed from Johno Hoins (Telluride, Colo./The Frederick Gunn School) and Raymond Speerbrecker (Revelstoke, British Columbia, Canada/Revelstoke Grizzlies (KIJHL)) to give Manhattanville the 3-0 lead as the game headed into the first intermission.

Nazareth would get on the board in the second period with a short-handed goal of their own, as Logan Tobias would net the only goal of the day for the Golden Flyers, for his third in the series. The Valiants would answer back later in the period as Elijah Devereaux (Webster, N.Y./Danbury Jr. Hat Tricks (NA3HL)) broke through the defense, passing it off to Paddison who powered it home to put the contest at 4-1 in the Valiants' favor. McKenna would net his brace with under one minute remaining in the second period, finishing a play from Tristan D'Elia (West Chester, Pa./Philadelphia Little Flyers (EHL)) Justin Fernet (Sherbrooke, Quebec/Taft School), pinning the game at 5-1 to go into the final intermission.

That score would hold as no team could connect on scoring chances, with both netminders locking down their respective creases.

Tripp Clarke (Cazenovia, N.Y./Northern Cyclones (USPHL Premier)) earned his first career colligate win between the pipes, turning in an outstanding performance with 34 saves for a .971 save percentage.

The Valiants held the advantage on faceoffs, 31-25, with Paddison pacing the Vals with ten wins in the circle. Eaton and Speerbrecker followed suit with seven wins each.

Both squads' penalty kill units were ferocious, as neither team could convert with the man advantage, as the Valiants went 0-7 and the Golden Flyers turned in a 0-10 performance. However, each team did net a short-handed goal.

Up Next

The Valiants take a week break from the ice, hitting it again on Jan. 26, when they welcome Neumann to Playland Ice Casino.
