Women's Basketball Rides Dominant Second Half to Roll Past Farmingdale, 90-59

PURCHASE, N.Y. – A dominant second half by the Manhattanville College women's basketball team had the Valiants closing out the week with a victory, marching past Farmingdale State 90-59. With the win, Manhattanville improves to 11-3 overall and 8-1 in the Skyline Conference to hold steady in a three-way tie for first place in the standings.

Manhattanville saw double-digit production from four different scorers. The charge was led by a career performance out of Livi Correia (North Attleboro, Mass./Worcester Academy) who scored a personal-high of 19 points. The senior guard went a perfect 10-for-10 at the free throw line to compliance her four field goals and added eight rebounds, five steals and four assists.

Julianna Kascic (North Bergen, N.J./Paramus Catholic) notched her fourth-straight double-double and ninth of the season with 13 points and a team-high 10 rebounds. Amanda Orlando (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) pieced together her highest scoring production of the year with 17 points, adding eight boards, four steals and four assists. Angela Downey (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst) rounded out the leading offensive performers with 13 points, serving as the team's leading deep ball threat on the day with a trio of three pointers.

Despite the lopsided final score, the first half was anything but. The Valiants took control in the first quarter on the back of a 13-for-16 mark at the free throw line over the opening 10 minutes. With the score tied 9-9 with less than four minutes remaining, Manhattanville scored 12 unanswered points to take a 21-9 advantage. All but four of the points came from the charity stripe, with Correia and Esther Ramos (Queens, N.Y./Forest Hills) adding layups as part of the run.

While momentum seemed to be firmly on the Valiants side after the previous four minutes, Farmingdale came roaring back to even things up before the halftime buzzer. The Rams shot 63 percent in the second quarter as the Valiants shot just 25 percent while going 0-for-5 from deep. Manhattanville finished the first half 0-for-9 from beyond the arc, and coupled with just four free throw attempts in the second compared to the 16 trips to the line the period prior, the Rams were able to completely wipe out Manhattanville's lead that had peaked at 12 points with five minutes remaining. An 18-6 Ram run was capped by an old-fashioned three-point play by Mia Simmons to tie the game up 32-32 at the half.

Nursing foul troubles and a .276 field goal clip through the first half, the Valiants were desperate to regain the momentum they found earlier in the day. Things continued to go south as the Rams scored the first seven points out of the break to take their largest lead of the day. Manhattanville was able to close the gap by getting back to the free throw line, hitting 10 of their 12 shots at the stripe in the third. Down by one, Kascic put the Valiants back in front with a pair of free throws with 3:35 left on the clock. The tide began to turn after a scoop and score by Correia before Downey snapped Manhattanville's 0-for-12 start from deep with a three-pointer that brought Kennedy Gymnasium back to life. The Valiants went on a 15-2 run to close out the quarter to go up 55-43.

With the energy back behind them, the Valiants erupted for 35 points in the final quarter to comfortably put the game to bed. Manhattanville's lead never dipped below 14 and went on a 13-3 run to cap off the contest with the 90-59 win.
