PURCHASE, N.Y. – A dominant home effort had the Manhattanville College men's basketball team closing out the week with a 72-44 victory over Saint Joseph's Brooklyn. The win sees the Valiants improve to 11-5 overall and 5-3 against the Skyline Conference.
Ten different Valiants recorded a basket in the win, led by a combined 35 from
Andrew Saint-Louis (Norwalk, Conn./Notre Dame Fairfield) and
Tony Hastings (Clarkstown, N.Y./Clarkstown South). Saint-Louis posted 18 points on a 7-for-11 effort from the floor and finished with a team-high seven rebounds and four assists. Hastings, meanwhile, scored a season-high 17 as he drained five shots from beyond the arc. Hastings added three steals, a pair of rebounds, two assists and a block in one of his finest games as a Valiant.
Tommy Lotito (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's) matched Saint-Louis' rebound total with seven boards alongside his nine points and two assists.
Ryan Giordano (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) collected six caroms as he set up his domain under the basket, scoring eight points with two helpers.
With the comfortable lead, the Valiant bench got extended minutes.
Neven Noor (Pomona, N.Y./Albertus Magnus) scored five points in his five minutes on the floor, while
Manny Udeagha (Yonkers, N.Y./Aduvie International School) scored four and collected five rebounds in ten minutes.
John Ranaghan (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) also scored four points with three steals, three assists and three rebounds.
Manhattanville took away one of the Bears' biggest strengths in three-point shooting as Saint Joseph's went 1-for-25 from beyond the arc. The Bears missed their first 21 shots from deep as the Valiants built up a lead that would quickly become insurmountable as Saint Joseph's had no way to match Manhattanville's scoring tempo.
The Valiants opened on a 12-0 run through the first 4:42 as Saint Joseph's missed their first five shots, all from beyond the arc. The Bears would finally get on the board after Stephan Direny opted for a close range option to put an end to Manhattanville's scoring streak. After the Bears cut their deficit to seven, the Valiants called timeout to regather themselves. The move worked as Lotito immediately hit a three in the following sequence to put Manhattanville back up by double digits, 17-7. The lead never fell back below nine and the Valiants scored the final 11 points of the half to go up 36-14. Saint-Louis and Hastings combined for three three-pointers as part of the run.
The Bears were able to do little to slow down Manhattanville in the second as Hastings went on a solo 5-0 run to begin the half. The Valiants advantage never dipped below 25 points and peaked at 37 after an Udeagha layup with 8:27 remaining moved the score to 60-22. Manhattanville's reserves would cruise to close out the game, Manhattanville's third-straight win.
