READING, Pa. – Four different scorers reached double-figures while all 14 players recorded a point for the Manhattanville College women's basketball team on Thursday night as the Valiants rolled past Penn State Berks, 103-35. The Valiant improve to 9-2 overall following the win, their final non-conference matchup of the season.
Manhattanville has reached the century mark in back-to-back games as the team entered Thursday's road contest following a 100-37 win over Old Westbury on Tuesday. This marks the first time in recorded program history that the Valiants have had two games in a season in which they scored 100 or more points.
Coming off a season-high performance of 19 points earlier in the week,
Niyona Smith (Baltimore, MD/Concordia Prep) once again led the way offensively for Manhattanville, scoring 17. The junior has reached double-figures in three straight games as she went 8-for-12 from the floor, adding three blocks.
Julianna Kascic (North Bergen, N.J./Paramus Catholic) notched her sixth double-double of the season with a 16 point, 19 rebound effort in the win.
Jamison Agostino (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) scored 11, with the deep ball threat doing all of her damage within the arc in the win as she hit five field goals and sunk her lone free throw attempt.
Caroline Barbalato (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y./Briarcliff) matched Agostino's offensive output as she put up 11 in a very efficient 10 minutes off the bench.
Both Agostino and Kascic dished out three assists, trailing only
Amanda Orlando's (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) four on the night. While Kascic dominated the boards,
Kristen Scrobola (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas High School) and
Gabby Tucker (Port Chester, N.Y./Blind Brook) would finish with five and four rebounds respectively for the Valiants.
The Valiants shot just under 50 percent for the night, hitting 43 of their 87 field goal attempts. The night started with an 11-for-21 clip in the first quarter. The Nittany Lions got on the board as Ashlyn Clark hit 1-of-2 on her opening trip to the free throw line ahead of the Valiants scoring eight straight. Penn State Berks would pull back within five three separate times in the quarter before Manhattanville scored the final 10 points of the frame to go up 26-11 through the opening ten minutes.
The run carried into the second quarter as the Valiants scored seven straight to open the frame, all from Smith. The Nittany Lions hit just two field goals in the second as the Valiant lead continued to climb. Up 35-16, Manhattanville went on another closing run, scoring the final 10 of the half.
Julie Debrocky (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) hit a pair of threes while layups from Kascic and Orlando had the Valiants up 45-16 heading into the locker room.
The dominant Valiant defense continued in the third, holding Penn State Berks to just one field goal. Conversely, Manhattanville's offense hit 59 percent of its shots in a 29-6 scoring advantage in the quarter as the lead swelled up to 52 points at 74-22. It was cruise control to close things out as the Valiants shot 52 percent over the final ten minutes, putting up 29 more points to notch the 103-35 win.
