Women's Soccer Topples Maritime 9-1

PURCHASE, N.Y. – Six different Valiants found the netting with three having multi-goal efforts as the Manhattanville University women's soccer team dismantled visiting Maritime in a Tuesday evening Skyline Conference tilt by a final of 9-1. The win brings Manhattanville's record up to 4-3-3 overall and 3-2-1 in Skyline action.

Freshmen Alexandra Brauer (Lake Grove, N.Y./St. John The Baptist Diocesan) and Drita Tinaj (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) led Manhattanville's offensive effort with a pair of five-point games. The rookie cohorts posted matching statlines of two goals with an assist. It was both Brauer and Tinaj's first multi-goal games of their collegiate careers.

Alessia Cioffi (Pawling, N.Y./Pawling) joined the freshmen duo with a pair of goals of her own, her third and fourth of her junior campaign. Cioffi has had a career-high stretch recently, tallying 11 points on four goals and three assists the last two times she's stepped on the pitch.

A team that's found goals hard to come by at times, the Valiants wasted little time getting things started, striking twice in the opening 5:46. It was Brauer opening the game up in the third minute, as she headed in a ball off a Kelly Barrera (Port Chester, N.Y./Port Chester High School) corner to strike early. Two minutes later, Barrera set the table again with a shot that rang off the post. The ball rolled around, unable to be corralled by Privateers defenders, where it found the foot of Mia Castaneda (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) who fired it home for the two-goal advantage.

After setting up the first two scores, Barrera got into the goal column in the 32nd minute as Megan Leser (Ossining, N.Y./Ossining) sent her off to the races with a breakout pass from midfield past the Privateer defense. Barrera would not be caught, finishing off the sequence with her fifth goal of the season. The Valiants netted one more before half, as Brauer struck again by way of Stephanie Sanchez (Rye, N.Y./The Masters School) to put the home side up 4-0.

Tinaj resumed the action with the first two goals of the second half, scoring from Sanchez in the 49th minute before adding an unassisted tally in the 57th. Just 42 seconds after Tinaj's second strike, Kailey Roxo (Seymour, Conn./Seymour) scored from Jenna Moraglia (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford), the sophomore's third of the season, putting Manhattanville up by a touchdown. Cioffi closed out the scoring display with her two tallies, with Tinaj and Brauer collecting the helpers on her strikes.

Maritime broke up the shutout in the 69th minute off a Sara Williams goal.

Macey Girard (Branford, Conn./Branford) picked up the win, playing the opening 56:02 and stopping the lone shot she faced. The junior improved to 4-3-3 in the Manhattanville net with a 1.19 goals against average for the year. Alexa Bennett (Sparrowbush, N.Y./Port Jervis Senior) occupied the net for the closing 33:58 of the contest, allowing her first goal of the season.

The Valiants outshot Maritime 35-3 with a 17-2 shots on goal margin. Corner kicks were significantly more balanced, with each team earning four in the contest.
