Brooklyn, N.Y. - The Manhattanville University women's basketball team faced off against St. Joseph's University Brooklyn this evening for their second conference matchup of the season. Heading back home with a 77-55 win brings the Valiants to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in conference play.
Four Valiants tallied double digits tonight in the victory. The scoring was headed by Gabby Tucker (Port Chester, N.Y./Blind Brook) who secured 21 points in the effort while her junior cohort Julie Debrocky (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) followed with 15 points. The final double-digit members of tonight for Manhattanville were Niyona Smith (Baltimore, MD/Concordia Prep) and Esther Ramos (Queens, N.Y./Forest Hills) each adding 13 points to the mix.
The Valiants outshot SJBK 26-11 in the second quarter after a closely contested first quarter of the Bears taking the offensive upper hand scoring 16 compared to the Valiants 11. Manhattanville would open the second quarter scoring the first five baskets pushing the score to the Valiants leading 20-16. After the slow start from the first quarter, the Valiants shot 56 percent from the field compared to the Bears 20 percent, changing the momentum of the game.
Manhattanville maintained a vigorous offensive stand opening the second half. Debrocky opened the half with an easy layup pushing the score to now stand at 39-27. Ramos had a three-point run herself around the four-minute mark of the quarter to stretch the score to 55-32.
SJBK battled back in the fourth quarter putting up more of an offensive and defensive fight. Manhattanville just grazed by outshooting the Bears 16-15 in the final ten minutes of regulation. SJBK lead the quarter in offensive rebounds 3-2 and shot 38 percent from the field which can be closely compared to the Valiants 40 percent. Regardless of the grave efforts from the Bears, Manhattanville turned the game around due to the strong offensive presence in the second and third quarters of the contest.
A career high night for the Valiants as Tucker and Debrocky finished with top tiers numbers for themselves collecting a 21-point career high for tucker and a 15-point career high for Debrocky. Ramos finished with a career high for assists with seven in the mix.
