Women’s Basketball Drops Skyline Matchup to Farmingdale, 64-57

PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Manhattanville University women's basketball team took their second conference loss this afternoon against Farmingdale State College. With three players tallying points in the double digits, their efforts still were not enough to escape the Rams. The Valiants now stand at 6-2 overall while Farmingdale rises to 7-4 overall. 

The game was tied 53-53, with 2:25 remaining in the final minutes of regulation. The rams would then shoot to lead the game the rest of the way with the final score being the largest lead in the final minutes.  

Esther Ramos (Queens, N.Y./Forest Hills) led the charge with 14 points going 6-for-19 from the field. Julie Debrocky (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) followed closely behind with 12 points going 4-for-5 in three pointers shooting 57 percent from the field. The final valiant to score in the double digits was Gabby Tucker (Port Chester, N.Y./Blind Brook) with ten going 3-for-9 from the field.  

Manhattanville spearheaded the effort in the first half, opening the first quarter leading 16-14. Debrocky went 2-for-2 on three pointers to help push the Valiants to a five-point lead with 1:21 remaining. Ramos added four to the mix while Tucker and Niyona Smith (Baltimore, MD/Concordia Prep) each added two to finish with 16 points at the end of the first ten minutes. Manhattanville remained in the lead in the second quarter, as the point production came via two more 3-pointers from Debrocky who now stood at 4-for-4 beyond the arc. With a lower scoring quarter overall, the Valiants outshot the Rams Eleven to seven to close out the first half.  

Farmingdale came back to life in the second half outshooting the Valiants 19 to 14 to open the third quarter. The Rams outrebounded the Valiants twelve to seven, giving them more offensive opportunities. Manhattanville led the quarter up until 2:06 remained. Farmingdale took the lead with 1:18 remaining from a free throw by Teneece Wooden to make the score 40-39. The final score at the end of the third quarter would stand at 40-41 with the Rams in the lead.  

Battling it out shot for shot thus far has kept this game so close. The largest lead of the contest for each team was eight points during the game as it never exceeded that. The Valiants retook the lead in the fourth quarter keeping it within three. With 5:55 remaining, the score was tied 49-49. Two good free throws from Amanda Orlando (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) put the Valiants back on top 51-49. Manhattanville would then abide for the final 3:29 remaining in the contest down. With the score prevailing so closely throughout, we saw all timeouts were taken in the second half with only two in the third quarter and four each taken in the final quarter.

The Valiants look ahead to the new year where they will face Albertus Magnus College at 2:00 pm on January 2 for a non-conference matchup.
