PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Manhattanville women's basketball team dominated on both ends of the court, notching the 82-40 win over visiting Sarah Lawrence on Sunday afternoon. The Valiants now sit at 17-3, riding the coattails of a seven-game win streak and keeping possession of first place in the Skyline Conference with a mark of 14-1.
The Valiants were led by a quartet of scorers in double figures with Niyona Smith (Baltimore, MD/Concordia Prep) pacing the field with her game-high 16 points adding on seven rebounds and three steals. Julie Debrocky (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) followed suit with twelve points of her own off the bench, rounded out by Amanda Orlando (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) with eleven points and Jamison Agostino (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) wrapping up with ten points.
Manhattanville came out of the gates strong, as they started the opening minutes of the contest firing on all cylinders. Kristen Scrobola (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas High School) helped head the scoring onslaught, with six points in the first quarter. The Gryphons tied the contest at 4-4 with 7:16 remaining, as Scrobola and Angela Downey (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst) pushed the Valiants out in front, to embark on a 16-0 run to end the quarter.
The Valiants would once again stymie their counterparts, allowing only a 22.2 percentage from the field, helping them to build their lead. The lead would never dip below 16 points after a Kendall Haymore jumper to put the score at 24-8. Smith would then sit down low on the block, helping to reestablish the Valiants lead, making four-straight layups, capped by a Debrocky make from beyond the arc to pin the Valiants with the 35-14 lead as the halftime buzzer sounded.
Manhattanville shot 56.3 percent from the field to help pull even further away from their counterparts, as the Valiants embarked on a 17-0 run to begin the final twenty minutes of regulation. Agostino and Livi Correia (North Attleboro, Mass./Worcester Academy) both totaled five points apiece in the third stanza, with the run being emphatically capped off by a Gabby Tucker (Port Chester, N.Y./Blind Brook) three-pointer to push the contest's total to 52-14. Sarah Lawrence would use the next four minutes to make baskets of their own with Anderson-Strawder and Josie Kent sinking shots, creating some much-needed offense for the Gryphons. Orlando and Ester Ramos would end the third quarter with baskets of their own to put the Valiants ahead, 59-20, for the final quarter.
More of the same from the Valiants transpired in the final ten minutes of play, but the Gryphons put together their best quarter of the day, shooting 44.44 percent from the floor. Haymore and Colleen Coughlin had five apiece for Sarah Lawrence, but the lead was insurmountable, seeing the Valiants capture the 82-40 victory and turn the calendar with another win in the books.
