PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College baseball team made their home field debut on Wednesday afternoon as the Valiants fell to William Paterson, 11-10. With the loss, the team drops to 3-2 overall on the young season.
It would be a back-and-forth battle at the plate and on the base paths for the Pioneers and Valiants.
William Paterson's Jake Lutz would deliver the opening blow scoring on a wild pitch in the first inning before Manhattanville would tie it up off a single up the middle for
Christian Amoruso (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West). In the second inning, the Valiants then capitalized on their lead with a fielder's choice from
Anthony Mezzaucella (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle), a single through the left side for
Jake Parisi (Centereach, N.Y./Centereach) and a double to center field for
Gregory Tashik (Midland Park, N.J./Midland Park Jr./Sr.). They would take a healthy 5-1 lead going into the third.
Ty Kobylakiewicz blasted a two-run homer for the Pioneers followed by Tom Radigan hitting an RBI single to bring it back within one. Into the fourth and having himself a game, Kobylakiewicz doubled to left center to tie it up.
Joshua Gillison (Buchanan, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) would respond with an RBI double of his own to take back the lead.
William Paterson would tie it up once again in the fifth inning off an RBI single from Christian Hay. The Pioneers would take their first lead of the day as Lutz would single to the shortshop bringing home an unearned run. Players would advance on a wild pitch and another run would score as William Paterson took an 8-6 lead.
Chris Goohs (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown H.S. East) would get two back for the Valiants and tie it up with a two RBI single.
In the sixth inning and feeling the pressure, the Pioneers would take a two-run lead after a double from Connor Luckie and a fielding error from the Valiants. With no response from Manhattanville, Kobylakiewicz hit an RBI double in the seventh to take their biggest lead of the game, 11-8.
The Valiants would try to claw their way back after four straight walks as
CJ Archul (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) came across the plate. It would then be a run scoring for a 11-10 score as an infield fly rule was called and three outs would come from the confusion of the Valiants. It would be proper defense from both teams in the eighth keeping everything square as the game would be called due to darkness and the Pioneers would earn their third win of the season.
The Valiants sent four pitchers to the mound with
Max Krom (Southington, Conn./Southington) throwing three innings in the start, allowing four runs on six hits.
Chris Antonelli (Yonkers, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) went 1.2 innings being charged with another four runs on three hits.
Joseph Lacoparra (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) would earn the loss after pitching one inning giving up two runs on two hits.
Gregory Esposito (Katonah, N.Y./John Jay) would close out the day with 2.1 innings pitched, giving up one run on two hits and striking out a team-high five batters.
Rookie
Ryan Osso (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester) would find the most success at the plate securing three runs on two hits for the Valiants. Joining Osso would be Goohs racking up two runs on two hits with two runs batted in.
The Valiants have a busy weekend ahead as they hit the road for a pair of non-conference doubleheaders. They will take on Neumann on Saturday, Mar. 16 at 12 p.m. followed by Centenary on Sunday, Mar. 17 at 11 a.m.
