Cornelia Scores 150th Goal in Men's Lacrosse Loss to Marymount

PURCHASE, N.Y. – Wrapping up the non-conference slate, the Manhattanville College men's lacrosse team dropped a 14-9 decision to Marymount University on Saturday. The loss drops the Valiants' overall record to 4-6 ahead of next week's Skyline Conference play getting underway.

Nick Cornelia (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) continued his dominant season and career with six total points on three goals and three assists. With his first goal of the game with 7:12 left in the first quarter, the graduate student reached 150 tallies for his career. Cornelia becomes just the fourth player in program history to reach the 150 goal plateau, the first since Jim Seymour joined the illustrious group in 2005.

Cornelia's monumental goal came in between a pair of Jack Williams goals for the visiting Saints who would retake the lead with 4:52 left in the opening quarter. Marymount dominated the final five minutes of the first, scoring four times to take a 5-1 lead they would never relinquish.

The Marymount scoring run continued into the second with Mason Vandawater extending the Saints lead to 6-1 2:33 into the quarter. The Valiants ended the half on a 3-1 scoring run over the closing 7:18 to close the gap down to a three goal deficit through the opening 30 minutes. Jake Strobel (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains) notched his first goal of his sophomore campaign off a Cornelia assist before Bryan Maguire put the Saints back up by five 42 seconds later. Unassisted goals by Sean Larkin (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains) and Cornelia closed out the second quarter to pull the Valiants closer, down 7-4.

Marymount struck twice to open up the third to go up by five to match their largest lead of the first half. Michael Swift (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) notched a man-up tally by way of Cornelia with 9:53 left in the quarter before Chris Bochilo answered back a minute and 51 seconds later. The score held steady at 10-5 for the next seven minutes before Tyler Berch (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) tallied the Vals' second man-up goal of the quarter, once again assisted by Cornelia, with 47 seconds left. While it looked like Manhattanville would have a four goal hole to climb out of in the final 15 minutes, the Saints managed to score with less than a second on the clock as Maguire beat the horn to put Marymount up 11-6.

Both teams scored three goals to close out the game as Manhattanville was unable to pull closer than five goals. Swift, Berch and Cornelia each logged a tally in the final 15 minutes, with Nick Corace (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) and Dash Munson (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) picking up an assist each.
Joe Ulzheimer (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) made a career-high 22 saves in net for the Valiants as he played all 60 minutes on the field. The sophomore goalie sits at 137 saves for the season with a 14.38 goals-against average.

Matthew Newman (Yonkers, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) led the defensive effort with three caused turnovers and three ground balls. The grad student's grounder total was matched by Cornelia and Jarod Wilmoth (Harlem, N.Y./Cardinal Hayes).

Faceoffs were 16-10 in favor of Marymount, with Aaron Goldstein (Walden, N.Y./Valley Central) winning six draws for the Valiants.
