PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – It was a day to remember down on Long Island for the Manhattanville University softball team as the Valiants plated 40 total runs across a doubleheader sweep of Saint Joseph's Long Island on Friday afternoon. The Valiants' winning streak hits double digits, with Manhattanville now victors in 11 straight games to improve to 11-7 overall and 6-0 in Skyline Conference play.
A pair of milestones accompanied the wins as graduates
Charli Shinstine (Encinitas, Calif./San Dieguito Academy) and
Sarah Harker (Irvine, Calif./Irvine) continued to etch their names in the program record books. Shinstine recorded the ninth no-hitter of her career in the opener, while Harker became the Valiants' all-time triple leader as she legged out the 15
th three-bagger of her career in the finale.
Game One Recap: Manhattanville 21, Saint Joseph's Long Island 0 (Five Innings)
The Valiants scored their highest run total in a game in the last four years while Shinstine was unhittable to take the opener in dominant fashion.
Shinstine was back to her vintage form as she shut down the Golden Eagle bats. Her ninth no-hitter of her career, and her second time holding Saint Joseph's without a hit in the last two years, was supported by six strikeouts. The only blemish on the fireballer's statline were a pair of hit batters as she also did not issue a single walk. She continues what has been a dominant two-week stretch, as Shinstine has not allowed a run in her last five games, posting 27 consecutive shutout innings to drop her ERA down to 3.40 on the year.
As Shinstine dealt, the Valiant bats teed off on the Golden Eagle pitching, scoring 21 runs on 16 hits. A three-hit, six-run first set the tone for the duration of the day as Manhattanville had a field day at the Saint Joseph's Softball Stadium.
Olivia Fasce (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) and
Samantha Walsh (Spring City, Pa./Owen J Roberts) reached to open up the inning in painful fashion with a pair of hit by pitches before Harker drove in the first run with a single.
Rachel Coleman (Lake Forest, Calif./Mission Viejo) drove in two more with a double to center while
Alexa Lazur (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon) and
Samantha Reyer (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) each collect an RBI later in the frame. Reyer accounted for the sixth run, scoring on a passed ball.
Manhattanville added five more runs on five hits an inning later. Coleman plated
Amaya Esparza (San Diego, Calif./Granite Hills) with an infield single to begin the two-out scoring frenzy. A two-run single by
Juliana Parkes (Victoria, British Columbia, Canada/Belmont Secondary) preluded back-to-back run-scoring doubles off the bats of Lazur and Reyer to put the Valiants up 11-0.
After being held scoreless in the third,
Sydni Brooks (Anaheim, Calif./Cypress) and
Isabella Tansey (San Diego, Calif./University City) drove in a run each in the fourth. Manhattanville saved its biggest inning for last, crossing the plate eight times in the fifth.
Victoria Lang (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills H.S. West) delivered an RBI double off the bench before a pair of runs scored on an error during
Madison Gonzales' (Azusa, Calif./Sacred Heart) at-bat. Brooks added another RBI on a single before Golden Eagle errors prolonged the inning. The final big blow came off the bat of
Jori Wilkendorf (Livermore, Calif./Livermore), driving a ball to the gap in right center for a two-run double. When all was said and done, the Valiants were up 21-0.
Six different Valiants hit a double as part of the opening game rout, while Manhattanville also stole four bases. Gonzales, Lazur, Reyer and
Olivia Fasce (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) each swiped a bag. Five different batters finished the contest with two hits, with Coleman being credited with a game-high three RBI.
Game Two Recap: Manhattanville 19, Saint Joseph's Long Island 2 (Five Innings)
Far from finished after their opening game offensive outburst, a ten-run first for the Valiants paved the way for a 19-2 victory to complete the sweep.
The Golden Eagles shrugged off the no-hitter by logging 11 hits in Game Two, but
Emily Mottoshiski (Craryville, N.Y./Taconic Hills) was able to weave through the traffic on the basepaths to hold Saint Joseph's to just two runs in her complete game victory. The junior struck out one as she improved to 5-1 on the year and lowered her ERA to 4.81.
Despite just three hits in the first inning, the Valiants caused chaos by scoring 10 runs as seven walks and a hit batter doomed the Golden Eagles. After Fasce and Harker scored on an error, Manhattanville loaded the bases on three straight walks. Lazur drew the fourth free pass in a row to force home Esparza before Reyer delivered the first hit of the inning eight batters in with a two run double. Tansey drove in the sixth run on a sacrifice fly before Harker legged out her record-setting triple, clearing the bases in the process to tack on three more runs. Esparza capped off the explosive frame with a single to the outfield to plate Harker to put the Vals up 10-0.
Saint Joseph's got a run back in the bottom half of the first. The scoring halted in the second and just one run scored in the third as Harker drove in Walsh after the junior hit a leadoff double. Manhattanville's final performance of the day came in the form of an eight-run fourth inning as the Valiants once again produced runs without racking up hits. The damage was done on four hits and three Golden Eagle errors. Tansey and Walsh delivered RBI singles ahead of an error on
Angelina Cruz' (Oceanside, Calif./Rancho Buena Vista) at-bat resulted in run No. 14 coming to cross. Esparza added an RBI single, Brooks drew a bases loaded walk, while two more errors led to two more runs.
Ruby Wilson (Merrimack, N.H./Bishop Guertin) collected the final RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly to score Brooks.
The Golden Eagles scratched out one last run off Mottoshiski in the bottom of the fourth, while the junior pitcher stranded the bases loaded in the fifth to close out the win.
Four Valiants finished with two hits in the victory. Walsh went 2-for-2 while drawing three walks, while Harker ended with four runs batted in.
