Softball Sweeps John Jay, Extending Win Streak to 15 Games

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville University softball team pushed their win streak up to 15 straight on Tuesday with a doubleheader sweep against John Jay College. The Valiants climb to 15-7 overall on the season.

Game One Recap: Manhattanville 8, John Jay 0

It was another masterful performance on the mound for Charli Shinstine (Encinitas, Calif./San Dieguito Academy) to lead the way in the opener as the Valiant starter improved to 7-5 on the season. The graduate student went the distance, throwing a full five innings, while allowing just one hit and one walk. This dominant showing was highlighted by a season-high 13 strikeouts.

In the first inning, the Valiants got off to an early 2-0 lead after an Amaya Esparza (San Diego, Calif./Granite Hills) RBI single roped to center field, followed by a single to right field for Juliana Parkes (Victoria, British Columbia, Canada/Belmont Secondary). The baserunners would advance on a throwing error by the Bloodhounds' catcher bringing another run home.

Later in the third inning, John Jay had their first and only hit of the contest from Elika Rodrigues. The Valiants responded with a three-run bomb from Samantha Reyer (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) to take a hefty 5-0 lead.

Closing in on a run-rule victory, Manhattanville scored their next three runs in the fourth inning from a dropped fly ball by the right fielder with one run scoring. Esparza then hit an RBI single through the left side and Rachel Coleman (Lake Forest, Calif./Mission Viejo) doubled, advancing to third on the throw as Esparza came home to score the Valiants' eighth run of the day. They would hold the Bloodhounds scoreless through the fifth inning to secure the win.

Game Two Recap: Manhattanville 11, John Jay 3

The Bloodhounds started off the back end of Tuesday's action with a three-run home run from Jailene Santiago in the top of the first inning.

In the second inning, the Valiants responded with four runs on five hits. Parkes would get on base first with a double down the left field line. Reyer followed up with a single through the left side as Parkes made her way home to get one run on the board for Manhattanville. Olivia Fasce (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) later hit an RBI single as Isabella Tansey (San Diego, Calif./University City) singled to center field. Samantha Walsh (Spring City, Pa./Owen J Roberts) closed out the inning with a 2 RBI double to right center as Fasce and Tansey each scored with the Valiants taking a 4-3 lead.

Manhattanville continued to bring runs home in the fourth inning when Tansey grounded out into a double play, as Alexa Lazur (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon) made her way home. Then in the fifth inning, Coleman launched an RBI double to right field to add another insurance run.

The Valiants made use of the run-rule in the sixth inning with Fasce and Tansey already on base and Walsh reaching on a fielding error by the second baseman. Fasce got herself home to take a 7-3 lead. Sarah Harker (Irvine, Calif./Irvine) then hit a three-run home run, Manhattanville's second homer of the day to go up by seven. It would be a run-rule sweep for the Valiants as Reyer reached on a fielding error by the shortstop bringing Madison Gonzales (Azusa, Calif./Sacred Heart) home. This would secure the 11-3 victory for Manhattanville's 15th straight win.

Emily Mottoshiski (Craryville, N.Y./Taconic Hills) took to the circle, pitching a full six innings. She gave up three runs on seven hits with only one walk and five strikeouts. She would improve to a stellar 7-1 record on the season with a 4.33 ERA through 12 appearances.

The Valiants are back on the home diamond tomorrow, Wednesday Apr. 17 with a nonconference doubleheader against Hunter College with first pitch at 3 p.m.
